2 Stroke '11 250 XC-W setup advice.

Hey guys!

I never thought i would be saying this, but I am a new owner of a brand new 250xc-w thanks to a very nice relative.
This is my 2nd 2t and 2nd ktm i have ever had (first one was a ktm 50). I was hoping to get some advice for this bike because I pretty much have no idea what i need to do to this bike. I was talking to a fellow DBA member and he was helping me out very much with setup. I just have a few questions:

What silencer would you guys recommend for this bike? I will be racing this bike and it has to pass tech inspection. I was looking to get the FMF Q for the bike. The shop i bought the bike from has a Q for the bike and they said i could take it for 100 bucks, so i was thinking about just taking that one.

What premix do you guys like to run? I was thinking about the Castor 927. Thats what we would run in the few 2t bikes we ever had. Plus it smells amazing! I was just curious if there is any premix that is just a total must to run because it helps that much more in a ktm.

any other things i need to do to get this bike running like a cadillac besides jetting and suspension?

Thanks,
Michael

Sweet ride you got:thumb: No pics:noidea: I ride yamaha so I would be no help for ya:ride:
I dont think you could go wrong with castor 927 it is a good oil.

Nice, get the right springs for your weight or it wont work right. Use whatever oil wont gum up the PV. I like to use 3 oz oil per gal to make it easy to mix, its 44-1. The Q will be just fine.

I have a 300 XCW(e) with about 140 hours on it at the moment, but they are fairly similar bikes so here goes.
The FMF is a good choice for the silencer.
Pre mix I would use Motorex 2T full synthetic. Use the recommended ratio! My manual says 60:1, I run 60:1, period! Most other brands do not allow the ratio to be higher than 40:1, some 50:1, due to poor in solution mixing. You can find this on the oil containers.
Jetting I would consult the manual, but from other sites this is what I see:
Needle N8RH middle clip
38 Pilot Jet
168 Main Jet
Air Screw 1.5 to 2.5 turns
Two strokes are not a mystery to set up correctly, but they are different than 4 strokes.
Shoot me a PM if you like and I'll give you my phone number if you would like to chat at length.

Thanks for all the help guys! I won't be picking up the bike until friday. They had to order one from Phoenix, so i will be sure to post up pics ASAP! I just wanted to get a good jump on tips for setting up the bike.

I will probably be sending you a PM soon about set up. i would like to get as many opinions for set up. Plus, I pretty much have no experience with 2t bike set up. I just know how to premix fuel and ride them.

For jetting I was thinking about doing a JD jet kit (?). All of our carbed have JD jet kits in them and we love the kits because they are easy to work with and the instructions are legit.:thumb:

It sounds like you are getting a new bike. That being the case you will have "spares" for the carb from KTM. (there is a reason they are expensive.LOL) an assortment of needles, pilot and main jets. I wouldn't worry about a JD jet kit. At most you will need a needle and that is only about 8 bucks. There will be A LOT of information regarding the set up for suspension and carbaration..You should get a briefcase and a number of full page manuals. It won't be the little 3" X 5" booklet you get with Japanese bikes. KTM is the real deal and they seem to take pride in their equipment and want their riders armed with as much information as they can provide.
The biggest problem I find with people and 2 strokes is they do not know what they are "feeling" and struggle providing proper feed back to make informed decisions on carb set up. Detonation, "pipe bang", run on, that type of stuff.
Shoot me a PM we can talk.
Oh yeah, unless they changed for 2011 you will need a skid plate. $100.00

Thank you very much for the help.:thumb: I think i just need to ride it and see how it goes. I have some good friends that know how to work on all this stuff. So I will see how it goes and report bad (WITH PICS TOO!).
Thats funny that you brought the skid plate up because right when I got home from the dealer, i forgot to look and see if there was a skid plate.

Oh and one more question... What pipe gaurd would you recommend? I was thinking about the Moose E-line carbon fiber. I remeber riding with this one guy on the trail and he had this craddle that was hyde (i think) that bolted up to the frame, it looked like it had pretty good protection.

Oh and one more question... What pipe guard would you recommend? I was thinking about the Moose E-line carbon fiber. I remember riding with this one guy on the trail and he had this cradle that was hyde (i think) that bolted up to the frame, it looked like it had pretty good protection.
I have broken a carbon guard in the past. Expensive. I now use a aluminum guard from Rocky Mountain that fits "all". I think it was 25 bucks. I've smashed the crap out of that as well as the pipe. Guess I should quit riding the Rock Trail with KTMRACK!

Great post, I told you they could help you here! They will get you all setup. Get that pipe guard on,spark arrestor, bark busters and get out there and win the AA series this year!

Hyde is a good product, but the US importer is not very customer service oriented. He has been banned from KTMTALK due to his lack of follow up with customers. Nice unit tho if the purchase goes smoothly. Regular pipe guards are OK, carbon not OK. Carbon can be so stiff that it transfers the hit to the motor and breaks the exhaust flange on some KTMs. I run without one at all. I would rather replace a pipe every couple of years than break the motor.
