Got some cash and it's time for a new bike

Yes, it's finally time. Been riding a XR600 since 2000.

I have one primary requirement. It's got to have a plate. I like riding gnarly singletrack, but I've been known to do 300+ mile day rides in the dez. Mountains, woods, desert, it's all good.

Not exactly sure how much I'll have to spend. I'd love to pick up a 2012 KTM 500 EXC, but I think I'll be a few k short of that 10,500-11,000 out the door price for that machine.

What about the Husky? I've not really been following it since the BMW buyout. The only stuff I've heard has not been good, but like I said I don't know. The a Beta might work. I have some possible connections to a good deal on one of those. Any other suggestions? Husaberg's are nice, but even more expensive than the KTM.

If my funds are as expected I may have to go with a few year old model.

No DRZ's or XR650L's. I need a lightweight bike. Besides I might just keep the good ole XR for the sofa like seat to do those long desert rides on.
OH! You know I am an affectionado of the XR! Hands down, the best, most reliable bike ever made! I'm thinking of giving up a couple of them, but will always keep one, with a brand new engine in a crate! (For real!)

I'm looking for a 2004-2008 450 KTM EXC. Street legal. They are cheap, have the magic button, and parts are easily available along with lot's of dealerships locally.

It's gonna take a while before I get over my XR addiction....one kick, never fail, change the oil, and ride all season without maintenance!

Do they have a "Chantix" pill for XR's? Take the pill, but you can keep on riding for a week, before you can get off the bike and ride another?

Surprised no one has said anything about the new Husaberg 570. A lot of us rode it early this year as a test drive in the dez on one of the camping trips. Even though it was heavy, it felt like I was riding a 250 with the way the engine was configured. My only complaint was that the frint end was a bit squirrelly. But that would be fixed with a steering dampner. Just my .02.

I think the point was not what is the BEST new bike, because if money was no issue, we'd all be driving kick-ass cars and trucks and have new bikes. I think he want's to upgrade, but not shell out $9K for a new bike. He want's a great bike at a less than new bike cost. New to him, but not new. Am I right?

I have always shopped and found a good used bike with low hours. That is the way I would go no matter what brand of machine you are interested in. They are out there and some are practically new with a much lower price tag. :thumb:

I told Rez to stay out of. That was an honorable mention.

Uhhhh excuse me .... Please refer to CARLSBERG ... ... waddya think I was referring to BEER????

YES the main tank is on the small side (2.2 gal) HOWEVER, you can replace the (plastic) subframe with a plastic 1 gal tank. I have it on mine ... only problem has been the fuel pump ... hopefully it won't go south again. ... while out in a wash .... millions of miles from camp ... with a kid that laughs at you when you fall over trying to make a turn in the sand .... damn kids, who needs em! :foul:

Sorry .... I have to chime in. The weight thing I think is the top heaviness...I think it weighs in at 265. The front end was squirrelly but i think that is because I wasn't used to the bike. I have a stabilizer on mine, still working on the adjustments of it getting it fine tuned foreach type of terrain.

And thanks for bringing it up Geek ..:thumb: ... Palmer, you know the rest! :moon:

Aw yes the Burg 570. Got the opportunity to ride one of these in stock trim. Was impressed with the pull using the stock gearing. Felt supper light for a big bike. Was squirrely up front without the Damper, but the front never went anywhere if you stayed loose. Great bike if you are in the market for new, but as Carl mentioned he is looking used and I do not think you will see one of these on the used market too soon.

Hey Rez, you don't ride much, sell him yours and go back to horses! :moon:

That bike is barely broke in! Talking to my buddy the other day who rides a 99 650, he said he was on the original rings and piston still.
Can't picture you on some new fangled bike Carl! Want to buy my 530? She don't get no love these days.
