Thinking about getting my first helmet ever! :smirk:

What kind of helmet should I get for MX?
What kind of helmet should I get for trail riding?

Why do I need a helmet?

My helmet has no visible cracks or damage... can I use it?

When do I replace a helmet?

Is riding without a helmet is the only way to go?

EDIT- LEAVE OUR MOTHER******* RIDE REPORTS ALONE.

Alrighty fellas. This is my first real ride on a bike since my last crash (I'm not supposed to be ridding ). This is also my first ride on a 2-stroke since two years ago when I sold my CR80r! I was very surprised with the bike. I happened to LOVE it. I really like the two stroke power. It's kind of incomparable, the KX100 to my CRF250r, but I feel a lot faster on the little two-stroke. If I do end up being able to ride again, I will be selling my thumper for a 2-stroke for the sake of money saving and fun.

Now for the trail. We kinda made this trail up a mountain beside my house. The trail needs a lot of work, as you can tell because I get hit in the face numerous times by branches, twigs, and sweet sweet thorns.
The trail is pretty fun, and it is actually pretty steep. You can't tell by the video, but hey, we're riding straight up a mountain! At the very top of the mountain, where I turn around at, we spotted a white tent about a hundred yards away. I'm guessing it's either a moonshine still or a meth lab. The moonshine still is very plausible, considering I live in the "Moonshine Capital of the World" Franklin County, VA. :smirk:

Hope yall enjoy the video!

PS: I gotta give you trail guys some credit (coming from a moto rider), that ride was hard!

I read this and wondered why you couldn't ride so I thumbed through you posts and found out...

Your Nuerologist is an ass... A serious one but yet still selfish. when dealing with doctors you need to seek counsel of atleast 3. When it comes to sport related injuries this is especially true and you seek sports doctors. Now the brain is tissue matter not solid like muscle but still tissue and it does bruise hence a concussion... eventually the bruise goes away.... My brother hit a car at 150mph flew over the car and then the car ran over his head ( he hit the car so hard the ins co. totalled the car.... his skull swelled 5 sizes but today he snowboards and does everything else just like he used too...he won't ride a street bike anymore but thats a different story....there's a reason why some helmets cost 100 and others cost 800.... I'm glad I bought the $800 helmet cause thats the one he borrowed when he crashed.
I would continue to see doctors and get regular scans on a 3- 4month basis if its really of any concern...
Good luck

Oh yes. I understand what you're saying. I'm waiting for an appointment with a 3rd neurologist at the moment. So far, 2 have said no. And the 3rd and final decision is waiting for scheduling. The only problem with me is that I've been mentally effected by all of this. I'm a lot slower, I forget a lot easily, I don't pay attention as good as I used to, and I'm a little mentally unstable. What they are worried about is that my 4th head injury will greatly effect all that and I might not be as lucky. But I think that's they way it is with any head injury.

I do need to get a new helmet soon. I'm using the same helmet that I've had 2 concussions in already. :banghead:

ummmm as soon as a helmet has any kind of impact you are supposed to destroy it... that means if you drop it on a rock or asphalt its done! At the Daytona 200 everyone must use a new,out of the box sealed helmet for the race. No question and no exceptions... you provide the helmet, they provide the inspection....

That's :BS: I've been through a ton of crashes with my helmet. Everytime I crash I get off the track and pull the pads on my helmet to make sure the foam is still good. If it is, and there is no damage to the rest of the helmet, then I go back out.

Not if there's nothing wrong with them :noidea: I check them really really really well. Belive me, my helmet looks like new. A few graphic scratches but thats all.

If it rings your bell throw the helmet to hell.

remember that rhyme. You should always replace your helmet if you have a bad crash. The only reason I have my old helmet is for when I get my go kart tuned up(clone engine w/mods) and it has a roll cage. It's more of a little extra protection that I don't really need(but hey, might as well play it safe if your gonna be stupid) than the full protection that riding my dirt bike demands.

That's foolish beyond belief. You can't visually see the damage to the foam. A helmet is a one-time-use item. If you hit the helmet against the ground with your head in it, the foam compresses to absorb the energy. It will NOT "un-compress". Of course if you didn't hit it hard, the foam may still be able to absorb another small impact, or it may not. But what if your next impact ISN'T small? And now, the helmet foam has been compromised, so it can't absorb as much energy as it should have been able to? It could be the difference between walking away from a crash or being carted away from a crash.

A helmet is a consumable item. After one time doing it's job, it's done, it's life is over. Replacing your helmet is a cost of this sport.

Exactly!:thumb:
I know people that buy 3 or 4 helmets a year.... If my kids helmet rolls off the bike and hits something other than soft grass its cut in half and tossed.... Large chips where you can see the helmets cast.... garbage. The chip compromises the structure.... no question about it... just do it. a $400 helmet is cheaper than the 1 trip to the nuerologist...

And a $150 helmet is cheaper than a $400 helmet...

You just said you had been through "tons of crashes with your helmet" :picard:
