4 Stroke RS 400, 450, 520 Dual Sports announced

Yea all the ktm excs in the states are efi now starting with the 12' model. I would get 50mpg easy on my 350exc. And that's with ecu mapped to the EU map to make it run alot richer and geared lower for trails. In stock form I was getting up to 60mpg. That's all off road with little to no street. The 500 is about the same on gas. Some of the yamis like the 250r and the Honda 250l gets over 65mpg lol

Last Sunday 2 bikes went out.

2013 Husaberg TE 250 - went on reserve at mile 70.

2013 KTM 350 EXC - ill go to the has station and fill it up tonight and let you know the mpg. If this bike is getting 50 mpg ill be surprised. Ill report on the gearing as well.

Stand by til tonight.

I'll be surprised if it doesn't get 50mpg :P.

Ken, take the Cal Poly DS ride we did together for example. We didn't get a fuel break till the 80ish mile mark. I had a stock tank, that holds 2.25 gallons. Granted the fuel pump and tank sock take a tiny bit of room, plus I don't ever fill it to the top as I heard that its not good. Overall, I would say I had about 2 gallons in it, but I carried that little fuel tank on me just in case (which I ultimately just splashed in your tank :thumb:). When receiving our "free" one gallon of fuel at the 80ish mile mark, I still had about half gallon left, probably more.

I wouldn't call that a gallon of gas on that fuel/lunch break. And I think you might get close to 50mpg but not really that high. It all depends on the terra and alt on an EFI. I have had EFI since 2008 and had only the one issue that Pat pulled me back to camp on. Could have been fixed on the trail if I had been smarter. I prefer the carb still, over the EFI... You can not fix a dead pump (unless you have an extra) on the trail period. You will be towed back to camp. So, that being said, I get great MPG on my 520 Beta, The desert tank on it will give me a full day ride of well over 140-150 miles of mix, sits low enough to not feel i, and the bike is just way better than the TE450. Bet theBeta will come in under the price of the KTM for this year. Still offer three mdls in street/dirt. Voyager holds you back because of RPM? Ears are for that.

Yea, it def. wasn't a full gallon of gas. I got like 4 pumps from the barrel. But that even goes to show that we did what around 130 miles? that day and I only used my stock 2 gallon tank. The only fuel I got the entire day was those few pumps at lunch break and still never saw my fuel light come on. My bro and I have our gas lights come on once or twice. Both times was around 100 miles which means I had 10-15 miles left. Yea and Husky's only claim to get 40mpg on their bikes. While KTM is 55mpg. KTM's are not only ready to race, they are hybrids :P

I would say I averaged around 50 mpg or a little more for my 350. It's not that hard to believe. A lot of other people with the same bikes averaged the same.

Well, if your talking bone stock and a 350 leaned out motor, might be spliting hairs. Now if you were to do what most people do and open them up, get the more agressive mapping, etc....mileage will certainly suffer.

To each his own, my normal desert riding is an all day affair with 100-120 mile loops. The less electronics the better when I am 50 miles out in the middle of no where in a canyon that getting towed out of might be a big issue. Kennedy Meadows is another place that is an issue. Again. Not saying they will fail. I have just never had an issue with my carb and I wouldn't expect to. Before long, we won't have an option as even now the newer WR450 is efi'd so this conversation will be mute in a couple of years:ride:

Our bikes had the EU maps (most aggressive/richest map available besides custom tunes), were de-smogged and uncorked for the most power. Only thing we didn't have was a full pipe set up. And we still averaged 50 mpg. FI was great to me. I never experienced a single issue. I'm sure the first bikes with FI had it's issues but more popular EFI gets, the better it will become. Closest thing to a problem I had with the bike was when my key switch was acting funny at SLO.

Just 2 cents I found lying around...
If you are going to ride dual sport, at the track, or stay within 10 miles of the truck at all times... then I think there is nothing but an advantage to having EFI. It makes excellent A/F mixtures at all RPMS, increased power, and added fuel economy.

EFI will never be a good idea for REAL off-roading. More electronics means more items that can fail due to seemingly minor issues. The more items that can fail make the chances of being stuck in the elements, miles and miles and miles from the trucks, more and more likely. Whether the technology has come along way or not, there are ZERO tow trucks in the places I ride. And very few folks willing/able to tow a person 20-30 miles out of that scenario. I wouldn't put that responsibility on the people I ride with.

2 for 2. Both EFI bikes I've been on REAL rides with, have been towed back to camp. Whether the fix was minor or major. They (and whichever poor soul had to tow them) were done for the day.

It's like taking a bomb along with you that "probably won't explode." I agree, it probably won't... but why are you bringing it? -BIG DAN:thumb:
Again... just 2 cents from miles and miles into the vast mojave..

I think these bikes just look amazing! I would love to give one a test ride for a few miles and see what they are all about!
I hope Beta sticks around for a while, they are certainly the trickest, japanese alternative, out there. -BIG DAN:thumb:
