New to the form! but back into DIRT!

Rack - Those are awesome photos! I can't wait to get started! Went and got a slew of gear today!

Turtle - That is a really good point I measured the length on the longest bike (mine) and from farthest point, tire to tire and it is just under 7', and I was just assuming 4' would be wide enough but never thought to measure the bikes side–by-side.

A few local bike shops told me that I would regret getting any trailer less than 8’ to 10’ and any trailer with 12" tires. So what are you opinions about that? My biggest issue is I live in a really old built neighborhood where the properties are 80 to 100+ years old. So yards are small, garages are detached (mine is a 2 and ½ as it was bilt 40 after the house was built). So my issue regarding the trailer is where I keep it when I’m not using it. I wanted a trailer that I could literally push up, vertical against the back wall of my garage so it's out of the way. I don’t want to get into a storage bill every month just because I have a trailer to haul bikes.

For gear I picked up MSR Metal Mulisha apparel for myself and a Fulmer RX3 Blue Plasma helmet. My 12 year old got Shift apparel and a Fulmer JX4 Junior Blue Velocity helmet, my 8 year old got Fox apparel (he picked orange/white/black – Honda colors???) and Fulmer JX4 Junior Wild Strike helmet. Gloves, googles, and chest protectors, no boots as the retailer was low on selection due to Christmas, I’ll check my local bike shops for those items. Not really knowing products for off-road / MX, I hope our picks were decent.
Well, I have heard about these guys but don't have any personal experience with them. The trailers fold up so that may solve the storage issue. Bigger up front cost unless you can find one used. There are 2 dealers in Ohio so maybe you could take a look at them.

How much room do you think you have available for a trailer in your garage? I would suggest measuring it out once you have everything in there you normally have. Remember, you can store the bikes on the trailer so don't include them.

My own personal opinion on a trailer.
1)I like the idea of the tires being no smaller than 15". I see those trailers with real small tires humming down the road and I just think to myself that those poor tires are spinning at such a high rate of speed that I just wouldn't feel comfortable with my bikes on the trailer. I have never seen on fail or known one to fail, that's just what goes through my head when I see that.

2)Always get a little bit bigger than you think. It's nice to have that extra bit of room when your climbing around the trailer loading the bikes. I think a 5x8 should be enough. Sometimes you will be fighting with the bars hitting each other when strapping them down. Move bikes around to different positions cause some bikes bars will be higher than others so that can help with that. You can also load the middle bike in backwards, strapping it against the loading ramp. Better make sure you have all the locking mechanisms in place for the loading ramp.

This one seems to be good fit.

Keep posting up questions, were all here to help, well, most of us. That RosyPalmer dood, :foul:

OK so after marking off with black electrical tape my garage floor, I am very comfortable saying that a 5'x7' trailer with hold the three bikes and two containers strapped down, one behind each of the kids bikes. The black tape is marked off as a 6'x8', but once I up righted the bikes as they would be with tie downs etc., they fit fine in a 5'x7'. Not much extra room, but a 6'x8'x trailer gets me into a larger size trailer then I really want at this point. I agree Turtle, that smaller tires just seem to be if'y on a trailer going at highway and rough roads etc. But 13" vs 12" seem standard in the class trailer I'm looking. So I think I'm going to look into a 5'x7' utility trailer at this point.

I think you'll be fine with that set-up:thumb: If you are looking at the width and length and how much room it will take up, don't forget to add the ~9" to the width on each side for the fender wells and ~3' in length for the tongue. I think that would make a 5' x 7' trailer's footprint about 6.5' x 10' as far as how much room it will take up in the garage.

Of course, it could also save you room as it becomes a "storage" facility for all that extra stuff:doh:

PS - outstanding choice in bike mfg.:thumb::thumb::thumb: Don't drink the Koolaid

Turtle - OK... well I use to own an R1!, so Kawasaki and Yamaha are in my blood and really the only bikes I'd choose! No offense to anyone liking other manufacture, bikes! But when your comfortable with something and had great experiences with them, you stick with it!

Here is the trailer I'm getting, unless someone here tells me "NO - BIG MISTAKE"... and I've totally overlooked something obvious.

Looks great Scott :thumb: The only thing that you may wish to consider is this; those two little bikes will be gone and replaced by bigger bikes in what will seem a blink of the eye.

OK an update. I found a 5'x8' trailer not to far from where I live, about 30 minutes drive. I'll get it over the next few days. Also I'm working with the dealer I bought the 3 bikes from to return the PW-50 in exchange for a TT-R50. I was at a different local shop Sunday and they both sitting side by side, at only $100 difference in price and only an "1 and ahalf or so in set hight, the TT-R really looks more like a dirt bike class ride. They are trying to find one as I type... I'll wait and see what happens! The only issue is they have already executed the title change to my name so it technically is a used bike and they could not sell it as a new one. I think it will work out as they know the bike hasn't been started since they preped it 2 days before Christmas. Wish me luck!

Only thing I can say about the trailer is.... loose that big wind sail ramp. Your loading bikes up a 18" high deck. Cross country will suck the mileage on the tow vehicle.
Other than that,, bitchen!! :thumb:

Welcome!!!!

Put the kids into tall work boots with some sort of ankle support at least for the 1 couple of rides. By then they'll have a decent understanding of shift and brake control. Then throw them into some entry level mx boots like the Bilt brand from cyclegear since they will grow out of them fast. no need to spend extra coin on name brands until they start getting more aggressive on the bikes.....
Good luck :thumb:

OK so I confirmed with the dealer I bought the three bikes from that they will allow me to trade back the PW-50 for the TT-R50 and the cost difference to me is a flat $400. I think that's isn't terrible as the price diff was already minimum $100 between the two bikes, the PW-50 is 2013, the TT-R50 is a 2014, and the PW-50 has already been title to me, so it's considered a pre-owned bike to the next buyer. I plan on getting the trailer this weekend or up coming week. So hopefully before too long we can get riding!

Pw is a fine learning bike.

See if they'll turn back the 230 too. Then go with a wr250.

Right guys it's just about $8,400+accessories+gear I just laid out cash for. On top of the fact that my two boys have never been around dirt bikes or road, (8yrs & 12yrs old) so either this will work out and we'll upgrade later or it's be a big flop and a bit of a financial sting in the wallet. ;( I's sure it will all work out!

It will all work out. Add some videos so the boys can watch various types of riding, MX, Off Road, Freestyle. It will help them see what they are about to embark upon. Also, if you can find riding buddies with kids in the same age range that helps too!
