Did you verify piston was at top of stroke when you had your TDC mark lined with the cam?

The piston must be at tdc.
I use a straw in the spark plug hole to verify that it is completely tdc before setting the cam. This is most likely the issue.

The pulse generator location is arbitrary to engine position due to a cdi controlling timing and dwell. Dont use it as a reference. It will be 30-40 degrees btdc.

Installation sequence is on, piston tdc when marks line up, altenator rotor mark, cam sprocket mark and head cover mark. Double checked on my lunch break, it will backfire if you give it gas while kicking. Backfires through exaust. Tried advancing and retarding pulse gen. Just backfires.

Back fire through exhaust and not carb tells me timing or beat exhaust valve.
