Wrist hurts. What can you do?

Hey everyone after some of our long rides my throttle hand and rist start to hurt. Like carpal Tunnel. Is there anything you guys do to stretch it or strangthen your wrists?:naughty: (Keep it PG-13 rated here everyone)

try to loosen your grip a little while your actually riding. Sometimes its easier said then done but doing so will not only help your wrist but with arm pump as well.

maybe try to ice it after your ride

 Sounds crazy, but buy one of those spring loaded hand squeezers or a stress ball. I have it in the car and as you are driving to work or around town do some squeeze exercises with it. It will strengthen your grip in your fingers and allow you to loosen the grip at the same time because you can rely on your fingers for gripping.

The best thing is to try and relax your grip. It's all that white knuckle time that causes the problems.

Now if I could only follow my own advice...

Stop masturbating; it will also make you go blind. :smirk:

No really, it is a conscious effort to not hold so tight to the grips. Helps with everything involved between your fingers to your shoulders.

My 2 cents, adjusted for inflation = 1 cent - try keeping you wrist higher in rotation. Look at your wrist straight out. If that's your starting point, when on the gas, you wrist is lower than your knuckles. If your starting point is wrist higher than knuckles, when on the gas, your wrist will be level with your knuckles. I have found that extended time with your wrist lower than your knuckles is the cause of wrist pain - in my situation. Kinda hard to explain, does that make sense?

When all else fails it's time for some medication. As in Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory like Ibuprofen, or Naproxen.

Does some good for me. I have some carpal tunnel, but only while bike riding. I get numbness, but no pain. It's been keeping my pace down the last few years, but I still ride.

Lots of good info. :thumb: But I noticed that nobody mentioned gripping more with the knees/legs. Sure it's probably more of a motocross thing, but I don't see why it couldn't work on trails to. Your legs are a lot stronger then your hands so why not use them more? Remember the harder you grip with the knees the less you have to grip with your hands. Plus it will help cut back on arm pump if you get it.

I experienced the same thing when I was quad-tarding it several years ago. We were riding over a lot of rock requiring a lot of wrist motion (I guess) causing me a lot of pain...not riding in that type of terrain I never experienced it again. Excersize it/them as suggested.......is all I can offer!:thumb:

Sounds good guys. Lots of great tips. I think I under stand the rist getting below the knuckles thing. I think that is why its just my throttle hand.

I use medical tape and wrap it tightly around my wrist to keep it in place whenever my wrist hurts, one of the chiro dr's got me doin that, im telling ya it works wonders tape it everyday for like a week. but people may look at you funny haha, and that stress ball thing is good too, i use the dynaflex thing http://www.amazon.com/Dynaflex-Sports-Gyro-Wrist-Exerciser/dp/B000LPG5US

Wrapping does help. Ive done that off and on over the years when my wrists hurt. Ive use tape for horses (its cheaper, disposable and often keep it in my bag) ace bandages and I have a couple neoprene braces too.

Strength, strength, strength! I :prof:need to get back into working out! I've been:rant: lazy. I feel it and it shows!
