What Cameras Are Good

I don't want to spend a bunch of money but I wanted to look into a video type that can be helmet mounted and easy to use. I also was wondering if there is an easy type of camera other than the one I carry in my backpack. If there is an easy to use camera I would be able to take more pics that I am accused of never taking. What are you all using out there?

i like the gopro for all the options and cases are fairly cheep incase you break one.

contour has a helmet camera that also has GPS built into it.. so it will record your trail for you.

Stealth drift has a camera that has controlls for it on a wrist band.

All three are great quality but have just slightly different options that area all good.

as fora regular camera thats small... i been looking at some of the sony cyber shots... they have a really cool panoramic option where you just pretty much film a landscape and it makes it into a kick ass picture.

I swear by the Go Pro Hero cameras (Get them here). They're very durable and the cases/lens are pretty cheap to replace. Not to mention they're waterproof in the stock case, don't need to buy anything extra. What really sets them apart though, IMO, are all the mounting options they offer:

  • NVG Mount
  • Handlebar Seatpost Mount
  • Curved Adhesive Mounts
  • Surf HERO Expansion
  • HD Wrist Housing
  • HERO Wide Wrist Housing
  • HERO Wrist Housing (Standard Lens)
  • Suction Cup Mount
  • Roll Bar Mount
  • Chest Mount Harness
  • Helmet Front Mount
  • Head Strap Mount
  • Tripod Mount
  • Vented Helmet Strap Mount
  • Grab Bag of Mounts
  • Flat Adhesive Mounts

You also can't forget the BacPac's:

  • 3D HERO System
  • Battery BacPac™
  • LCD BacPac™

For a still camera I use a Nikon Coolpix S6000, I picked it up on sale at Staples for $150.
You can find more details/specs on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034XKECE/

I see that the S6100 is out, might be a better idea to get the newer one unless the budget doesn't allow for it. http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-S6100-Wide-Angle-Touch-Panel-Silver/dp/B004M8SVEI/

Edit: Forgot to talk about the Coolpix. :bonk:
I really like this camera; it has a huge LCD display, point & shoot picture quality is pretty good, and it turns on quickly for those can't miss dirt naps. :smirk: Oh and it does also offer a sport mode were it'll take a couple picture a second, great for fast movement. :thumb:

Hopefully one day, I will win the lottery and get one of these:smirk:

^^^ My thoughts. I was hoping to find something a bit less expensive but I must say this looks like s sweet set up. Maybe I can find other uses to justify the $$.

We also use it for a few things at work, the LCD BacPac makes a big difference. :thumb:

I'm going to be buying some helmet cams so tell us the cons to the Go Pro. Are there any?

the only cons that i can think of are

its kidna bulky could be a bit slimmer like the contour
the only way to control it is via 2 buttons... would be nice to have a button you could mount or wear somewhere.
no zoom funtion.
it does not do well in low light situations

really thats the only things i can think of and the only thing i hear people complain about the GoPro is the size of it and how bulky it sits on a helmet

You want cheap, and I mean really cheap....you can do what I and many others have done. Not the best but it is so cheap that you can try and not feel like you lost much if don't like the quality. it is call a MD80 camera. It takes a micro sd card any size you want, I have a 2gb card which does about 30mins of vid and I think they have them up to 16gb don't quote me on that. The cards you can get at any retail store like Wal-mart. The camera is on ebay here is a link. It shoots in 720 witch is not HD but I don't watch youtube vids in HD most of the time anyway. It does a pretty decent job for what it is. I use zip straps and tie it to my helmet mouth guard but you can fasten it in a number of different ways.

you can also add a fish eye lens which is also what I did to add wide angle. I glued it on with super glue and it fogged up the vid a bit so be careful how you apply the glue to make it stick. the sticky they have on is not good enough.

here is a youtube of the camera on a guy. i have some but like I said I fogged my lens with glue so I won't post them for reference.

i am a eye snob so that quality drives me nuts but i cant say anything bad about it for that price.

also if you want a step up from that you could go with the older gopro .. the SD one... http://gopro.com/cameras/sd-hero-170-camera/ and its only 100 bucks
thats SRADS video and he uses one. Also the SD goPro is half as thick as the Hero and uses regular batterys not the nic ones or whatever tehy are

Yeah, not the best but when your on a budget it gets you through. I do like the 100 dollar one but I would still rather spend 20 on a camera and the 80 on the other things like beer :smirk:

:picard: See that's were we're different, I'd rather spend it on something I can use everyday (beer gut doesn't count).
