Neither is harder to work on. But 4Ts have 10X as many moving parts as a 2T.
So technically, a 2T is 'easier' to work on.

But both engines require specific clearances and routine maintenance to function properly.

As far as what lasts longer...
It depends soley on how you ride it.
Displacement directly effects HOW you ride. If it's larger, you won't typically have it at 100% all the time. Where a smaller motor you may have to strangle at 100% all the time to get the desired results. I can ride my 500 at 50% where I'd have to strangle a 125 at 100% to keep up. Thusly the 125 will wear more quickly.

So, a smaller engine will effectively be ridden 'harder,' requiring more frequent clearance checks and overhauls.
