If it's ported for high peak power, it might not be the best trail steed. Stock porting is for a broad torque curve. Grinding down the exhaust port for high rpm hp causes matching losses in low end torque.
Let us know the year. The early years are simple damper rod forks. I don't remember the exact year but in 87 or 88 Honda put the first generation right side up cartridge forks. Some of the best right side up forks ever. Honda put them on the XR600 and still puts them on the current XR650L. In 90 they put the first generation of USD forks and they sucked so bad riders swapped out the older forks.
