How do you clean your air filter? What do you use? What do you oil with?

Okay I would like to know
1. What is your your bike
2. What is your air filter
3. What are your riding conditions (Desert, Wet woods, Track, etc)
4. What do you treat your filter with?
5. Explain how you clean it, how you dry it, how you oil it, and if you grease it and with what grease?

Okay I will go first
1. 2001 WR250, 2008 WR250, 2004 CRF230
2. Running UNI air filters in all of them
3. Desert and Dry dusty trail riding
4. Tried No-Toil and found fine dust getting past filters. Now changing to PJ1 Cleaner and Oil.
5. Now that I have left No-Toil I just shot it with the PJ1 Cleaner (In spray can) Wash with water. Then let hang and dry. The spray with PJ1 oil and apply regular wheel bearing grease to the face of the filter and install.

I would like to know if there is a cheaper way to buy good oil for the air filters also because $10 a can seems spendy.

1.) XR600
2.) 1-Uni 1-TwinAir 2-NoToil 1- no name but it's like the notoil. It's great to have several filters.
3.) All but track
4.) Many different brands over the years. Currently PJ1 foam filter oil in spray can
5.) Paint thinner. I use an oil drain pan and clean all of my filters at once. I do a two pass method. I do a first pass to get the major amount of crud out and then toss the dirty solvent. Then I do a second pass to get them cleaner. Sometimes I do a third pass using water and dish detergent. Wal-Mart wheel bearing grease.

Gasoline will work, but it is not optimum. First it is dangerous from a flammability. Second is how it goes right through your skin and has some nasty stuff in it. That's why I now use paint thinner and some heavy duty gloves.

The PJ1 is about the cheapest. I've used 90W gear oil when out of "real" filter oil. It works, but not as well as a purpose foam filter oil. I use the PJ1 because it works and is about the least expensive. One of my local shops carries it.

I use these gloves http://www.labsafety.com/Best-Black-Knight-PVC-Coated-Gloves_24547000/

  2. :noidea: Twin Air I think
  3. Track
  4. No-Toil system
  5. Take the dirty filter off, throw it in a bucket with the No-Toil cleaner, clean it, set it aside to dry, grab the dried one from the ride before, oil it, and stick it on the bike for the next :ride:.
P.S. I have 2 filters that I rotate

I was told gas would break down the glue the filters were put together with?

As mentioned before...I've never had a break down by using gas, been doing it since 1973..."MY OPINION ONLY"...someone came up with a product that would sell (good or bad it's up to you)........

Bikes;
Husqvarna WXC 610
Yamaha 660 Raptor
Yamaha 80 Raptor
Stock filters
SKIN - Husky only...don't know the brand if not stock
Desert
Gas to clean both filter and skin (I don't let it soak), dunk it, ring it til it's clean (only takes a minute), ring it out, rinse with hot water (if possible), ring out again air dry...Apply small amount of motor oil (thin as possible), pour into hands spread onto both hands and wipe filters/skin with hands until completely coated.
Apply small amount of grease (whatevers available (mine happens to be marine grade...water resistant)

used to use gas, but switched to paint thinner/mineral spirits in the solvent tank I have now. Still use gas if out of that or on a ,utli day ride and think I need to do it.
I ride all but track now.
KTM, Honda, KX, etc
use Belray foam oil, the blue sticky stuff
Stopped using grease years ago with the hard plastic filtr cages. The oil in the foam seals the filter when it is compressed by the cage against the box lip. MUCH easier to clean up this way. NEVER ruined a motor or had anything get thru unless filter dried out like with no toil
Use twin air or uni

#4 I have this stuff called liquid power oiling tube, don't ask me its just what i got lol
#5 I soak it in gas and scrubb it out as much as i can then use dish soap and let it dry, then in the porning if it is dry then i stick it in the liquid power oiling tube soak with oil and strain out then install.

I don't know if that is the best way cuz i'm a noowbie at this stuff

1.08 YZ450F
2. 1stock 1 twin air
3. anything from dry open powerlines to way too tight soaking ass wet singletrack
4. NO TOIL
5. NO TOIL is the shiz get some warm water cap full of the cleaner in a bucket throw the filter in swirl it around for a minute rinse with hose and it's clean, throw it in the dryer if your in a hurry put on latex gloves add NO TOIL oil some grease on the seal and your done. ONLY NO TOIL CLEANER WILL WORK ON NO TOIL OIL, I've been using this stuff for a few years not and it is the easiest filter prep oil and cleaner out there in my opinion of course

I used to use gas to clean and spray on blue lable super tacky oil. Gas or mineral spirits was the only thing that got that stuff off. I ended up ruining three twin air filters with gas so i stopped using gas. It ate the glue off the seams. My new method is mineral spirits only to clean. After the filter oil sinks to the bottom I pour the mineral spirits back in a bottle to reuse. I went to the Klots spray on oil as you get more filters per can and the coverage is better and less tacky being easier to clean. The one thing about the klotz is if you use a little to much it will drip out of the airbox in a hot garage on a freashly oiled filter leaving a mess down the swing arm.

I think this is the route I am going to try:thumb: Thanks TWS

I've been using filter skins(oiled) and just changing those a few times before changing the filter. The filter is always way clean and sometimes it feels like it was a waste of time and money.
