Like CDA alluded to, make sure everything that you can control is looked after (ie; the sleeping, the eating, the bike prep etc) - after that, the "zone" seems to be an elusive state - when it happens, enjoy it. When it doesn't happen, don't fret it. I suspect some people never really experience the zone - just be happy when it happens. Just my $.02 Canadian.

I love being on the bike and in the "zone." It usually happens when Im relaxed, Im in good company, the bike is dialed in, my body is feeling good and Im warmed up. Never do I start in the zone. Always after I've been on the bike for a while, it least 20-30 minutes. Music almost always helps me to get there. Too bad I cant get in the zone with housework and such. Im NEVER in the zone with that sort of stuff.
