Other 1985 Honda Xr80 restoration thread!

Howdy folks! After the sale of my 1981 yz60, my budged for project bikes has increased! (by increased, I mean I know have money for them ). I just picked up this 1985 honda xr80r today, it runs, but burns oil. The seller said it was the crank seals, but that wouldn’t make it smoke since it’s a 4-stroke, (He might’ve meant valve seals, which is probable). I checked the oil, and it is quite a bit overfilled, so here’s to hoping I won’t have to tear the top end apart!!! :smirk:

Pics coming soon!

Yup, My first guess was valve seals, since it has crazy good compression (170lb’s is what the seller said, and that does feel about right, I’m gonna have to check for myself though.

I know it doesn’t look like much without the plastics on there, but it;s a sweet bike

Checked timing, and it was spot-on (I also checked the flywheel key). So my guess, is that the combination of burning oil, bad carb tuning, and a gummed up spark plug are the issues. (for the backfiring)
