Amatuer Is it all about racing?

So after reading for a few hours and then doing a little trip planning I got thinking about this. I always hear about the MX vs. Enduro vs. Hare and Hound stuff. Then guys talking about how good they are and what they have accomplished and a whole slue of BS.

Doesn't anyone ride to discover new county or hunt and fish anymore? I grew up on XR200's not because they could clear a double or because they were the fastest bike around but because you could kick it into first and craw down a trail with your gear and half an elk that you shot 10 miles from the road. Then after it sat all winter it would fire in the first two kicks.

I sit here and listen to how fast guys are and how they have to ride with a certain group cause they ride the same speeds and I wonder how fast is fast to them? Are they riding the same stuff we are? When they crash are they only hurting there bikes? How would they ride with fishing gear and cameras too?

I rarely see anyone loaded down with gear or any gear for that matter. Are these type of users far and few between. Does any one here do this? Has everyone switched to the ATV's for this?

people still do just everyone drives so much now you really cant, many places police frown upon randomly riding, cuz you could unintentionally end up on someones property and end up introuble

Bryce, I think most guys on this forum at this time are more of what you speak about. I'm in for destinations and the scenery myself. Since this Site is still the over 40 crew theres alot of us like that. Some just get there faster then others. Unfortuately(sp) Here in the CA desert there aren't that many elk and fishing holes but theres is a lot of hoes.:smirk:

two different crowds. Most on here seem to be into the ride rather than the destination. There is a group of guys here in Fresno that post on ADVRIDER. They like to take the sleeping bag and food go for a weekend trip and camp out. They ride dual sport bikes like DR400 and such. I personally want to do some of that, but when I ride it is more for the ride than the scenery. Scenery is good, but its the ride for me.
I dont have to go fast. I have taught LOTS of people to ride. I still take em out and wait n help them to this day. My son on the other hand is to the point he doesnt want to ride with me unless its just a guy trip and haulin ass and hill climbin and such. As I get older and broke down, I still love to go out and hang it out to the best of my ability, but the next several days I pay for it with my bad back n knees. I am slowing down for sure.

I just like to ride for the sake of riding. The thrill and the rush that I get. I like to explore new territory and see the scenery, but I like to do it at a fast pace. Fast for me at least.
Destination rides are very cool also. The fun part is the navigation. Finding a route, or a new route, to connect places that don't appear connectable takes alot of creativity. It also can take alot of exploring and backtracking so you need to cover ground quickly. Which means riding fast:D
I don't ride to to see new scenery, that's just what happens while riding. I don't ride to get to a destination. I pick a destination so I have a place to ride to. It's all about the ride. :ride:

Where are you from? Must be out west in the mountains.

To answer one of your questions, yes, there are people here that hunt, fish, and ride on two wheels. That "people" may be just me...I'm speaking for myself. I don't do 10 mile hauls with half an elk down a mountain though. We just don't have mountains and elk where I live, or I probably would! If it counts, I used a little kids plastic sled to tow a doe I pared out of the woods on an XR400 with about 6 inches of snow on the ground!:smirk: I do normally use an ATV for that chore...someone in camp was gone with it and all I had was the bike.

When I was in my 20's and 30's, we went to Canada every year on a big "adventure trip". Spring trips for archery black bear and lakers, summer trips, usually in or around Algonquin Provincial Park, to fish and canoe. Sometimes, we would hit the bush outside the park, with canoe and bikes in tow. Those were some of the BEST trips! Ironically, on XR's and old Fourtrax 250's. Up there you could ride the snowmobile trails in the summer for hundreds of miles in every direction. I would ride the XR with an old aluminum framed pack with my fishing gear and a Ruger 10/22 to find the next best trout stream or lake with good fish. The Ruger was great for paring out some Spruce grouse to add variety to the fish we ate daily. You could just ride for hours through some of the most pristine land on trails that looked liked they were groomed!

Nowadays, I guess because we made some money, we bought land and made our own paradise in an area where the law exists only in principle. I top off an XR with fuel, and I can still go in any direction to seek out new trails, hunting spots, and lakes I never fished before. It is kind of a bummer because most guys in their 40's ride ATV's now. It's impossible to have real fun and go to places that only a bike can when you ride with ATV's. I have lot's of XR's and have to practically bribe friends to trade off and ride one with me anymore. Most times, I end up riding solo because nothing puts an ear-to-ear Kool-Aide smile on my face like a summer day, a bullet-proof XR, and thousands of acres I know nothing about yet!

I never have owned a gun.
Really not the fishing type at all, hate fish.
Pissed my table saw is in storage along
with all of my other tools.

When I grew up I had to go to Huntington Beach.
and look at 50,000 girls in one eyeshot. I had
to go to the Colorado River and see topless girls
on a floating bar.

I was dirt a poor inner city kid in High School.
We had other sports:rolleyes:

This board is for motorcycle enthusiast that choose
off road in many forums, from many parts of
the country. Fishing and guns have no relevance
to this site. So why the confrontational approach?
You should share your little bit of heaven as opposed to
judging ours.

The last guy I seen switch to a ATV from a bike and thought it
was a good move was a 88 year old former Motorcycle cop.
His kids sold his bike(harley) when in the hospital so he walked down the street
and bought is friends ATV. He was doing circles in his 5 acer lot untill the day he died.

Thats my kind of guy! No pole, gun, or camera needed, but I do always carry a camera anyways.

Some of you are taking this a little wrong so I want to clear things up a little. I have no problem if you ride just to ride or if all you like to do is spin cookies in a 5 acre lot.

I guess we have what some would call a riders paradise here. We have the desert land to ride, canyon lands, flat lands, foot hills, or high mountains all with in an hour. We are blessed with single tracks into awesome lakes, old mining communities, etc but you almost have to camp or just glance and leave to make some of them in a day. Being new to this forum it seems all that was here were the guys that wanted to get from point A to point B the fastest. (Nothing wrong with that just looking for others that do what we do) I learn alot about the bikes and such here and I'm thankful for that, now I just want to find some tips about some of the other things that go with our riding styles. Is there another forum? Or site? Seems I ruffled a few feathers on this already.

I dont think you ruffled feathers here, I just think think there are a lot of different personalities including some smart asses. Remember, there is no voice inflection or body language on the internet and because of that it can create something out of nothing. Also race talk is part of many facets of riding. It sounds like you have some interesting prospective to share and perhaps some great pics, ride reports or info that I think even the smart asses or race heads would enjoy. Dont be afraid Bryce and dont bail from the site....just post up! I will enjoy your posts. And I dont exactly "fit in" with this group:smirk:and may never!:P

Put it this way....I dont ride with a chainsaw attached to my bike but I sure appreciate and find interesting the people who do and want to write about it.

I think Sun summed it up pretty good.

Our members vary from desert racers, trail riders, enduro, MX, casual riders, and more. So you'll get all sorts of input, you just might not necessarily agree with it. Look at me, I'm a MX only rider (until T-Day :smirk:), so I'll probably be one of those guys that always tries to go to "point B" the fastest. That's just me, but I do remember seeing a picture on here where someone had tied a chainsaw to their bike, so they're out there. :thumb:

Dumbass

See the difference? :P
