Newbie family looking for tips

Hi everyone. I’m jumping back into off-road riding after many, many years away and just joined the forum.

I’m a highly experienced street/touring rider, but my last experience on a dirt bike was as a teenager in the early 1990’s on a Suzuki 2 stroke 125, and I have the scars to prove it .

I love riding. I’m on my fourth Harley and do a lot of long distance touring. my kids love riding with me and I wanted to find a way to get them more involved, so I just purchased four new Honda CRF’s: 1 450RX for me, 2 CRF125 Big Wheels for my wife and daughter, and 1 CRF110 for my son.

For now at least we have no intention of track riding, just trail riding as a family. I’m seeing all of the high cost safety options like the $300 boots and fully armored shirts, pants, jackets, etc. I obviously want to keep my family safe, but don’t want to unnecessarily spend thousands that I don’t really need to.

Any advice on safety gear, as well and any other tips from experienced riders would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to check Cycle Gear for some options on less expensive gear; they have a couple of lines of gear that generally runs a little cheaper than high end brand names and is not really much, if any, less quality. They have box stores around the country and probably have one near you. I haven't shopped there in years, but back when I was racing Bob's Cycle out of Minnesota had some really competitive prices on gear. Back then it was a good deal as it was before they started taxing web purchases.

Welcome.
I have found the budget gear to work as intended, but the lasting comfort is usually where the compromise lies.
Especially where comfort matters, be ready to try something else.
If your kid hates putting on uncomfortable goggles/boots, they will hate riding. This applies to adults as well.
