That was awesome today! A 5.9 magnitude quake in OHIO! GTFO! That is the first quake I ever experienced! (That's a lie..I did eat Quake cereal as a kid!)

I guess for me its like a person from the Caribbean experiencing "snow" for the first time!

I was working at my 'puter at my desk, had a big glass of ice water next to me...and things started shaking! It was weird as hell! Everything was moving! It was like everything was jello for a time! My water was rocking in its glass!

I gotta check my basement foundation for cracks now, huh?

Really you've never felt one before? Southern Indiana is a hotspot for little ones, figured at least a few would have made it that way. :noidea:

BTW isn't it just incredible what can of power that is, being able to shake the ground hundreds (if not thousand) miles away? :shocked:

Nope, never felt one before!

I'm sure our friends in Cali are used to these, huh?

It actually moved me around in 360 degrees for about 20 seconds.

The weird thing is that it moves everything! It's not like an impact from one side or the other. Its all everywhere at the same time!

we got it here too Buck. It was centralized in Va someplace... We also had one back in 04 that was centralized just 6 miles down the road but that was only a 2.0 or something.

It's cool you were sitting down, and got to experience the whole thing. A 5.9 is a nice one if you're not running around, or in a car. I'm not a lesbian from Cal Tech either, so I have no idea what the different names are, but there are rolling type quakes, and then are the ones you can hear first, then it's like a Peterbilt slams into your house. I'm sure your foundations are all ok, but do have a look around, but do make sure all your gas connections are secure. Usually the water heater goes over, and breaks the the gas line, then all you need is a spark.:devil:.

Breaking news! Timo IS NOT a lesbian from Cal TECH. :shocked::moon::lol: You usually have either the ones that move laterally (strike-slip) or the ones that go up and down. The amount of damage and shaking depends on the type or ground you are sitting on (how well the earthquake waves can move thru the earth) and how deep they are. The more shallow as well as the strength, generally the more damage you have.

A lot of times when you have a small one where it is barely felt, it gives you the impression of vertigo and dizziness if you are still:devil: (such as at your desk) instead of the heavy shaking associated with the bigger ones. Yeah I know I am not just a "weathergeek":smirk::thumb:

One other thing of note. In the LPNF where I live, we are just a short 1/2 mile from the San Andreas fault.

It's odd to hear from people in different states reporting they felt the same one...From Varmont to Ohio to NJ, that includes a few states...

Oh AND I will add that (as far as I know :thinking:) TIMO isn't a lesbian seismologist.........:smirk:

Until stuff starts falling over, it's not "really" a quake.

I think that Timo is referring to one Lucy Jones. She is a Cal Tech seismologist who magically appears on the TV after every significant quake. Sorry to burst your bubble, but she is not a lesbo. Married with kids. I guess that's not actually good evidence to the contrary, but it is a good argument.

There are really only three kinds of waves. The P waves are the first shock that you feel if you are a bit away from the quake because they move faster. The S waves carry most of the energy and are really what you feel at a distance like Buckrun. Close to the center there are complex surface waves that are a big part of the damage.

Go down to the collapsed bridges with a melon baller and look for bums that the bridges fell on and get some new peepers... bring an icechest and some baggies tho.
