Dislocated shoulder

I just dislocated my shoulder at big buck gncc. Do u guys know how long untile I can get back on the bike and is there something I can do to get back on the bike quicker?

Ya it does. It had popped out wen I crashed but wen I rolled it popped back in and I sat for a min and was about to get back on the bike and was moving my shoulder around and it popped back out. The Emt's put it back in place. I didnt go hostpital.

Damn that sucks to hear. :(

If I were you I'd go see a specialist to get it checked out, bypass your regular doc from the get go and save some money. If you have a place close by that practices sport/orthopedic medicine, all the better, just don't get on a first name basis with them. :P

The thing with dislocated shoulders is that they generally pop out easier after the first time. You could also have soft tissue/muscle damage, the most likely being your labrum. The doc should be able to give you a recovery timeline, plus also help you with rehab (if needed).

I'm sorry, didn't mean it man!

1998: I was riding unfamiliar territory in unreclaimed mining areas when I crested the top of a hill at speed to find a chasm on the other side and a near vertical wall. I pile drove myself into the face of it! It was really ugly! I lost consciousness and awoke to find my bike on top of me bleeding gas on my chest. My buddy came up to the hill and pulled the bike off me. I sat upright and my right shoulder was under my chin.! Not good! In my daze, I remember my buddy saying, "Dude! You are Effed UP" The jackass even took out a disposable camera and took a picture of me saying, "You'll appreciatiate this later"

I popped my shoulder back in the socket with a push. "Your eyes were as big as dinner plates!" If you have ever something taken out of joint, like a finger, you know the immediacy of making it right as soon as possible!

I tore the shoulder up good requiring about $25K in reconstructive surgery.

They had to reattach the ligaments to my bone with screws and washers. They had to cut some other shit out, (Bursa?), plus "decompressing" the joint, I forget, but he said it will help you when you get older, since these injuries come back to haunt you years after your piss and vinegar wears out.

All said and done, 12 weeks recovery, the other 36 weeks just babying the joint! You can't mess with a major A + B point on your body without tender care and making sure it's right for the rest of your life.

Just sayin! Be careful and do all the prescribed PE!

Damn I was really hoping that it would end up being nothing, good thing you went to the doc. :thumb: Hope the surgery goes well, this your first one? (Your avatar looks like a xray so I'm guessing not)

Ok so now we need a full blown injured rider thread with xrays and everything. :smirk: Just keep us updated. :thumb:

Oh and look on the bright side, you'll now be able to spend all day on DBA. :ride: :P

One more thing, since you are having surgery and we know it's serious....for your recovery, remember this...RICE

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Plus ask the doc how soon you can start PT (physical therapy), the sooner the better. Also make sure that you actually do the at home exercises they give you. I would never do them and always ended up paying for it. :bonk:

thanks james. ya its my first shoulder. the x-ray is of my arm less than a yr ago lol. ya im going to ask, my consultation is Thursday to see wen i start PT.
wat do u mean compression?
HAHAHA yep all my time.

I dislocated my right shoulder 5 times in 2 years as a teen racing. had surgery at 17 and it never popped out again, but I can not throw a ball-except like a girl, ruined my school ball career. Left shoulder came out 4 times thru the years and had it fixed in 86. It was pretty good but just like the right one anything like throwing or over head lifting and it felt weak and about to pop out again. Well in 07 it did pop out at work. Got it fixed and was good for about a year and then one day just went bad on me. Still is weak and range of motion is poor, clicks and pops. I think the labrum came loose again.

So my moral is to let it heal the first time, dont keep racing or doing anything other than what the therapy says is OK. Once it goes bad then its bad the rest of your life, it will never be the same again. Surgery can tighten it up, but it still is a bad joint and prone to popping again.
