09-11-2010 - Ride Report - Hungry Valley and Los Padres National Forest

Another good ride. we had six of us. Loco4x4, DrewRanch, Fasz Kalap, ExIT, MotoRoku, and myself. We did a 55 mile run.

While on Yellowjacket, we noticed the forest service did not take care of the cabling across the trail. So, we took care of it ourselves. in-fact, we took care of the cabling in a few spots that crossed the trail. Loco4x4 is the man. He showed us that he could break the cabling using two rocks. I had doubts, but he fricken did it. then ExIT did the same technique on another cable later. that worked better than the cutters that were used on the first cable we cut.

Also, on Lockwood, there was a big tree laying across the fireroad. I hope the forest service gets up there and cuts through it. No jeeps are going past that unless it's cut or moved.

It was a fun ride. most of us took our dirt naps various times during the day. LOL. No one got hurt, or broke any bike parts.

Some vids:

1. Edison to Buttcrack - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgIlvVoLRag

We jump onto the roadrunner trail from Edison Stagin area and travel south until we hit Flyig W. Near Lower scrubs staging area. head west on Flying W as if your headin towards tatavium, However, cut into the open trails area to the right just prior to the Meadows trail . this area behind Lower scrubs, Upper Scrubs and cottonwood is an open area with a series of unmarked trails. just be careful of the two way and cross traffic.

2. Buttcrack trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jps5u5-WUQs

The Buttcrack is an unmarked trail in Hungry Valley. It is located in the open riding area behind Upper Scrubs, Lower Scrubs and cottonwood stagin areas. It's a true motorcycle single track within the OHV park. This trail has been used in the VCMC qualifier events. I like this trail, it gives you a workout. This trail is loads of fun if muddy after or during a rain.

3. Buttcrack to East Frazier - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ji34lQ8u7s

This starts of by taking a series of unmarked trails from the buttcrack to cottonwood. The old fallen tree trail which has been cut away and removed. We continue up the cottonwood hill climb (middle wall), and down the right wall. make our way to Sterling canyon trail to the East Frazier trail head. Today we didn't see any two way or cross traffic, however, be aware. you may me confronted with a jeep, truck, rhino, atv, or another bike in your path.

4. East Frazier trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tNO8nrtUA4

East Frazier trail is a fun trail. Also known as trail # 120. This is from the Sterling Canyon Trail head to the bench. A series of rocky, rutted, loose switchbacks climbing the hill. once at the bench, you should stop and enjoy a great view. When this first opened for the season, it was way more rocky than it is now. This trail exposes you to cliffs, so be careful. We have had to help a few riders recover their bikes from over the edge.

5. East Frazier to Lookout - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RUPW8U4t_8

This is between the East Frazier bench and the Frazier park Lookout tower. The lookout tower is slightly over 8000 feet. The first part is the last leg of East Frazier single track which connects to a series of fire roads, 8n24. you ride through the pines in the cool light air. You may pass some vehicles on the dirt road, as well as a hunter or two. It's not uncommon to see a family of deer up there.

6. Lookout tower to Whata trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKmlT9IwD58

This is the fire road, 8n24, from the Frazier park Lookout tower to the Whata trail head. a flowing road through the pines.

7. Whata trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDbRW9Sd2jQ

Whata is a fun flowing trail. Also known as trail # 131. We start off at the fire road 8n24 atop the hill and make our way down to the Tejon. The first few times on this trail, it was really rutted and had some big step downs. Those now have pretty good single track lines though them. about half way down the trail, if you look down to the right in a valley, you could see a nice looking lake. too bad the lake is in a closed area.

8. Tejon Trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5fK45XueLk

The Tejon trail, also known as trail # 122 is one of the most traveled trails in the LPNF. It cuts across the side of the hill from the sterling canyon trail had to Goldhill/long Dave transition. This clip is from Whata to Long Dave. The Tejon as been used in many VCMV qualifier events. Since this is a main trail be careful of on coming traffic.

9. Long Dave trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eA-0go8C1Y

The Long dave trail, also known as trail # 123 is a nice flowing trail. It takes you from the Tejon/Goldhill transition to a fireroad which leads into Lockwood Valley. It has a creek crossing, and a few rocky sections. Near the end of the single track, there is a fallen tree with a sandy soup in front of it. If your not aware of the hazard, you could easily get caught up in it.

10. Lockwood trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OxX83Z4fVE

The Lockwood trail, also known as trail # 127 is a jeep trail. This clip is from the Lockwood creek crossing to the Yellowjacket and steep Lockwood trail heads. There are a few torn up sections and a fallen tree across the road. Even though this is not the steep section of Lockwood, it still has a few obstacles that could catch you. as it did for me this time at the beginning, LOL.

11. Yellowjacket trail 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHrXVBLWfwk

The YellowJacket trail, also known as trail # 126 starts off as a jeep trail and migrates into a motorcycle single track. This trail has more than it's share of whoops. It is riddled with wire throughout. We cut away and made it rider safe in a few places, where we saw it as a possible danger. This clip is from the beginning of the burnt forest, just beyond the meadow, to the Sheep Creek walking trail, a few hundred feet from the fireroad trail head.

12. Yellowjacket trail 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeVChR_9BVs

The YellowJacket trail, also known as trail # 126. This trail has more than it's share of whoops. It is riddled with wire throughout. We cut away and made it rider safe in a few places, where we saw it as a possible danger. This clip is from just above the Sheep Creek walking trail, to one of the few places we cut a cable and made it safe.

13. Yellowjacket trail 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whpIxMcOg1o

The YellowJacket trail, also known as trail # 126. This trail has more than it's share of whoops. It is riddled with wire throughout. We cut away and made it rider safe in a few places, where we saw it as a possible danger. This clip is from one of the places we cut the cabling to the Lockwood trail head.

14. Lockwood trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dQOajCMXnA

The Lockwood trail, also known as trail # 127 is a jeep trail. This clip is from the yellowjacket valley to the lockwood valley. Normally you would see jeeps on this road, however today there is a tree laying across the road. a fun road with some torn up sections.

15. West Frazier trail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxXsij-0ck4

The West Frazier trail, also known as trail # 118 is a fire road that connects lockwood valley with the west Frazier tie road. It climbs half way up the hill. It has a couple of partially torn up sections, but not bad at all.

16. West Frazier Tie road - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWCYWnZazoQ

The West Frazier tie road, also known as trail # 119 is a jeep trail with a few torn up sections. it climbs up a bit more aggressive than the west Frazier trail does, and has a few obstacles. Not bad, but could catch you off guard if you chose the wrong line around a root or step up. a fun trail taking you up from West Frazier to 8n24 near the whata junction.

are you taking these pics with the gopro connected to your chest ?

cause that is a LOT of pics :thumb:

all but about 20 pics were taken from snagging a frame from the gopro videos I recorded. I also carry a small digital camera in my pocket and will snap pics at times. but most are from the gopro in video mode,\. Even though the gopro camera has a 5 megapixel still mode, I keep the video running, to capture dirt naps and such, and just snag pics from the video.
