450F 450 to 426 exhaust cam pics

well here it is... finally got my new cam chain put on and my cams back in, including my new 450 exhaust cam... now i just have to hope they're timed right as i can't go by the reference marks anymore due to the 450 cam...

Well I put it back together, checking the valves a few times as I went each step of the way, checked after I out the caps on, checked after I properly torques the cap bolts, rotated the crank a few times and rechecked. The whole time all clearances were in spec. Put the valve cover back on, plug, hoses, carb, then the gas tank and seat. Went to kick it over and I can't move the kickstart!!! so now I'm back to square one, just hopefully not too much worse off  tearing it down tomorrow and rechecking EVERYTHING!

How sure are you about the timing? Are you sure that you're using the correct timing mark on the stator (sp)?

I was pretty sure but now I'm 2nd guessing everything. Can't go by the reference marks on the exhaust cam either due to it being from a 450(this swap is well known and been done by people for the past 3 years at least with no known issues yet) so I guess best thing to do is to dive back in and see what the problem is if I can figure it out.

James would wrong timing on the stator cause it to lock up though?

Yes, especially if you have it turned 180 from TDC. First make sure that the piston is TDC before you put the cam chain on the cams. After you have everything together, take a socket turn the shaft over a few times before you kick-start it.

This same thing happened to me last fall, I had accidentally lined it up with the wrong timing mark.

Yeah you know what that was one of my concerns that I possibly had it set on the wrong stroke. Is that what you mean? I hope that's all it is man :\

That and the correct mark. My kx250F has 2 marks side by side and I have to line it up with the right one. (I think, I'd have to look in the service manual again) :bonk:

well after pulling the ignition cover back off and looking at things, and after spending 1 1/2 hours last night fishing my damn cam cap clip out of the top end with a magnet on a string :foul:, i see that my rear cam chain guide must not have seated properly and that's what is binding up. i'll post some pics after i get the flywheel and stator back off. looks like i'm going to have to drop $50 on a new guide  just don't understand how it didn't seat right :noidea: i hope that's the extent of the damage too

ok, had to take the bike apart again and replace the front cam chain guide. while putting the cams back in i came back to the question... are they in correct? now i could set them as above but i was thinking that according to the pic of the installation in the sticky on this forum the lobes should be 'flatter' and i set them like this below. which is right? the first way i had them or this 2nd way?

as you can see in these pics the lobes are 'flatter' like the pic in the sticky 450 cam thread but that throws the timing marks on my intake cam way off... what to do?
