After Market offroad lights

I want to replace the factory light I currently have on the front of my (94) Hoooska however I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a Baja Design, etc. KC says they have one too but it is up there in price...Do any of yoos guys have an idea what I can use? I want to go bigger/brighter however if there's a HID bulb that'll work in the factory housing then maybe I'll go that route...:ride:

I installed a 07 Infinity G35 HID headlamp/ballast into my stock BajaDesigns H/L shell (XR600). I also run a 200w stator...Works great. Except the extra weight from the ballast caused failure of the rubber mtg straps this past weekend.
I have another complete Headlamp assy from 07 G35 if you are interested in it?

Some if not all of the lighting stuff on my bike is from Baja Designs (on itwhen I bought it) I just haven't looked deeply into it. I may only need to replace the bulbs with a HID unit or ??? I'll keep your offer in mind though...thanks! :thumb:

If you have the BD shell, I would do JAT inards also. When I do go to a real light, that's what I'll be purchasing.:thumb:

I just looked and it's an Acerbis shell...didn't look close enough if it's an Acerbis lighting kit but probably is...I couldn't see any other markings saying otherwise. I really screewed up when I got the bike...It was set for DS so I went crazy and unplugged (cut :foul:) the wires to the tail light and turnsignals and I think I only unplugged the head light...need to take a closer look!:bonk:

Here are some pics
Mine is also Acerbis/BD shell

Since I'm not to familiar with M/C lights I don't know what is what however...it appears your's has more shizzle than mine... I have the rear light housing (round) and a plug! Not on the top of my priority list at the moment but I'll try and let you know once I start working on it. Thanks for the pics and the offer.

Thanks to AS for pimpin my info... :thumb:

... if you need some more help with "what works" and "what doesn't" ... let me know.

There's several options out there for the generic headlights and others like UFO, Acerbis, Electroworks, BajaD, etc.etc. I've tested just about all of them, including OEM headlights from KTM, Yamaha, Beta...and so on. The important component to note, is that most DIYers will do only a single HID bulb... one that offers a simple replacement of the OEM unit and uses only one ballast. Obviously giving you only one beam.... and one blinding light (if used on-road/on-highway). Great for some, but not all.

My light, is used primarily for dual sport'ers who want a low beam... and a high beam. Or, for those guys who like A LOT of light, and have A LOT of power to run the light in both Low AND High beam at one time... giving them essentially TWO HIDs on at one time. Truly an amazing output when compared to other lights in the same category/size. Also, with the added weight of the extra ballasts... most headlight shells/brackets can't take it and will eventually fail. Hence the reason I made an internal frame to support the weight. Plus, it makes it nice as no holes are drilled through the number plate to look ugly or just plain be barbaric.

I've tested, and tested... and tested.... Not all lights and their reflectors are created equal. Trust me on this. Most will put out light, no matter what bulb you put in them... but, is it focused? Is it putting out efficient light? Is it the beam pattern for your riding style? ... Some may think I'm being too critical, and ya know... your right. However, for the dual HID system I run, it took me a LONG time to match up a great reflector to use with a great Dual HID bulb. Otherwise, if it's single HID applications your working with... it's pretty easy to make any light, put out "more" if your using HID.

I see Rez's picture of the projector, so let me add;
They also work great as they magnify the HID output and provide GREAT output, but most of the time can't take the abuse of an off-road bike and usually are not waterproof or dust resistant. Especially if you use a projector with High beam capabilities, as there's a moving bulb... or a small deflector/armature that moves. Any time you involve a moving part in an off-road vehicle... your introducing points of failure. And when those parts usually come on automobiles, they aren't built to last through serious beatings a bike takes. If your projector doesn't have high beam... and only has low beam, you'll hate the cut-off line when riding hilly terrain. Or trying to see into the pitch black darkness, allowing your eyes to try to adjust... since they are used to looking at such a bright light just in front of you. They work, but aren't for everyone. I've got several on my test bench... if you care to see what happens when they fail, I can surely show you.

... I love night riding!! And it's all due to having the light to see with!!

JAT, That projector is a unit Im working on. I also built the DIY HID set-up shown here. But as you mentioned its only a single beam. :( I have been experimenting with different set-ups and ultimately was shooting for a Halogen low beam w/2nd HID (high) beam. Just last weekend I found the weaklink with my system: The stock rubber 'mounting' straps.
I need a receiver/bracket set-up like yours. I work in a bodyshop and got all the light parts for free + my labor, otherwise I'd have that JAT light set-up for sure.

. Just last weekend I found the weaklink with my system: The stock rubber 'mounting' straps.

You can get some metal hard mounts from Baja Designs. It make it stronger, but I have a feeling it will fail in a crash if the light takes too much of an impact.

As a side point, those rubber mounts don't last forever. I had mine fail before I ever started with HID.

Why the halogen low beam??
... using one lens/reflector for both a halogen low, and an HID high? Or... separate lens/reflector for both?

... and yes, as mentioned... there's "better" mounting systems over the rubber straps. The one I like "best", is the "quick-release" setup. But of course, it's most expensive at $100+ for the "kit". (no matter what type of frame, or inner metal frame to hold components)
