Concussion Recovery Time

So 6 days ago I sort of "went down" and ended up hitting my head. :bonk: I didn't black out, was just very groggy for about 10 seconds. Felt fine after a couple of minutes, so I went back out. I didn't really have a headache till late that night and the next day.

So my question is; how long do you guys generally wait until you start riding again? I really want to go :ride: tonight.

BTW here is an injury shot of where I believe my Leatt hit my shoulder, (or it hit my shoulder pad which then hit my shoulder) notice the straight line.

James, I did notice the straight line but, I thought it was the window frame. :P

I think the general concensus now with respect to the concussion recovery time is one week without any symptoms. :thumb:

After ruining a Bell on a rock, my buddy found me wondering around about 30 yrds from my bike. The bike was on its stand, don't know how it got that way, nobody around, and I didn't remember anything about the fall. I couldn't ride my bike either. Had to ride his quad back. My bean was semi-scattered for the next couple of hours, then a headache for the next day solid. After that, everything seemed ok. But I understand that injuries like this are cumulative over time, and recurring concussions get worse with lasting damage. (Ask a pro linebacker or boxer) Betcha AJ knows something about this.

No amnesia, then return to play......
Amnesia, then 1 week before return to play.

BR: you most likely didn't have an LOC, since the bike was on a stand, but if you did, a hospital stay would be in order. Then 4 weeks out of play.

James: a rug burn from getting wheelbarrowed across the floor will not pass here as a dirt biking injury.....try again :prof:

Thanks guys :thumb:

 Rug burn. :finger: :smirk:

On a serious note, I did go riding again today, didn't crash though.:thumb::P But I finally thought to check my helmet out and noticed something disturbing. The hard foam (stuff between the liner and the outer shell) had "soften" on the side I hit on. So I guess it's time for a new helmet.

lets see... i've been concussed probably 4 times and replaced my helmet 6 times in the past 6 years

i usually just start riding when ever i'm able to stand up and start my bike... the last race i was in i got a concussion on the first corner and still finished the hour long race (only made one lap though :banghead: ) took me 4 trys to stand up too :busted:

ohh... and one time at Dumont Dunes... i jumped 120' and the next thing i new i was in Barstow with the trailer loaded up and i was driving myself home...

Anytime you take a good shot to the helmet it's time to retire it and get a new one. It can only do it's job once and then it is toast.

I ended up taking the liner & pads out, wow it's worse then I even thought the second time. The hard foam is completely loose on the left side and the plastic section by the ear (where the chin strap comes out of) is all mushy. But the right side of the helmet is still together and solid. I knew that you should replace your helmet after a decent hit but damn I didn't think I'd hit that hard. But it does make sense now, been having headaches since then and for 1 1/2 days after I felt nauseous with a upset stomach. Had just chalked it up as stress with DBA stuff, but guess maybe not after all. So no more riding for me till after my Bro's wedding, which is next week so not to long of a wait. :thumb: (best man so I'd prefer not being injured in any way)

Don't think I've mentioned it yet but it's a Bell Moto 8 helmet. Got to say it's the coolest (temp wise), lightest, and most comfortable helmet I've owned. Already found one I like Bell Moto-8 Tattered Helmet not bad for $170, they're $400 for current model year.

So I guess the point of this is; if you ever take a hit, no matter how small, make sure to thoroughly check your helmet for damage.

It does not appear that you are buying from participating vendors of DBA :prof: Please rethink your purchase and consider using one of the 4 vendors that currently support DBA!:P
