Model Rockets

We like to launch model rockets while camping in the desert. I used to buy them at Walmart. Where do you buy your model rockets?

I have some of these type of rockets, will this work?

I used to make all sorts of rockets, this one, i put some really bad fins on it, the biggest engine possible(D something, on a small rocket) and launched it in the middle of august. It flipped around, getting to about 200ft, and then hitting the ground, where it promptly shot the engine out the back because the nose cone was too tight. This of course started a circle burning into the dry grass....

There are a few hobby shops in Fresno. I think there is a Hobbytown and I know they carry rocket stuff. Otherwise mail order. I bet there are a few hobby shops there that will have what you need.

Just don't let the rangers catch you. Fireworks are technically illegal and rockets fall under that group. It would have to be a real hard ass to hassle you for that.

I swear they sell those rockets at wal-mart up here...

The best way is to buy a builders pack online. It will save you lots of money in the long run.

The packs usually come with balsa wood for fins, lot's of different tube sizes ranging from a to e, several different nose cones wood and plastic, streamers and chutes, wadding, rockets, ignitors, you just have to buy glue and a launch pad. They even come with guides for getting your fins strait and such. I can't remember where I got my last one but I can tell you a super cool thing to do with them.

First build a rocket.
Next fill the space left from the motor to the nose cone with blasting powder for cannons
Next super glue nose cone back on.
Be sure to use a motor with a kick back charge such as a c6-5 or something like that.
Then launch and watch the kaboom. The kickback which is normally designed to kick your shute out will ignite the powder you put in there and make nice boom. That is all I should tell you for now but there are much more advanced techniques which can be applied. Have fun, be safe!:thumb:

Here's a cool site I found. http://www.apogeerockets.com/building_supplies.asp

Ahh model rockets, damn I've spent way to much money on those. :bonk:

I remember the science teacher at school had some massive rockets, heck they were practically missiles. He did tell us that you need ATC permission (NOTAM) to launch as they'll go well into Class E airspace.

They are out of stock here.

Geesh we heard you the first time. :smirk:

My dad and I built a 9 stage D size engines rocket that we never saw the last 4 stages. It just disappeared into the blue sky. We never called anyone but that was years ago.

I made a custom(um... more like ...experimental) 3 stage rocket with 1 D, a second stage C stacked on top, and a second stage A in the very top..... Never the less, we launched it off in the dark, and clearly all three stages went off, with the A taking the nose cone over a ravine. We never did find one piece of that rocket......
