Motocross for forest/quarry/mx track

Hi guys,

I know my question and bike requirements may be quite unusual, but I want to get back to my hobby that I abandoned 10 years ago and I hope you will be able to help.

I spent some time in the past with Derbi 125 two stroke (and last years with bandit 600 and r1). I decided to go back to offroad/mx riding and to prepare and take part in one of the biggest enduro races in Europe in the next 4 years.

Currently my budget is quite tight - 1500€ for the bike (it will be better in two years - end of mortgage, I have separate budget for the gear). What would you recommend that will be great for moderate mud, steep rocky/sandy uphills and some technical trial rocky parts of the quarry? I will ride twice a week in forest/quarry and 2-3 times a month at MX track.

Because of my small budget I can not afford an Enduro bike (they are around 2200€), I probably have to choose something from motocross bikes from early ‘00s.

The easiest to get at this price range will be Suzuki RM 250 and Yamaha YZ 250 - how will it manage in such terrain? Do you recommend anything else?

The YZ motor remained largely unchanged allowing for more available and current production parts. The last of the RM's were good bikes, I've ridden a few but I never owned one I actually preferred the KX250 of that era. Had an 04 YZ250 I really liked and was incredibly reliable and easy to ride and stable like the KX. Just my opinion.
I'm sure you will have a blast no matter what you get.
Welcome to the forum, and back to bikes! It's just a fun as you remember.:ride:

Depends on the year of the YZ. Engine is the same from 99-present with a few minor changes internal, porting, etc. Every engine part is available and can be upgraded.

Very versatile machine. What year are you looking at that is 1500?

Currently there are couple KX250, RM250 and YZ250 (there are also kxf, rmz and yzf but they for sure were not maintained properly looking at the price, and I’m not quite convinced for 4 stroke). Years: 2000-2004.

2000-2001 YZ250 you sit lower in the pilot seat. 2002 to current you sit more like on the bike. I prefer the steel frame bikes over the aluminum, but the suspension on the 06 up is the cats meow of suspension. 02, 03, 04, 05 YZ's are all bastard children with a mod of some sort, but still very capable.

I’m a RM guy, but for what you want I’d probably go with the blue bike, unless you can get a much better deal in the KX or RM, because As stated before the YZ has remained relatively unchanged and is still in production, this means finding replacement parts or parts to modify the bike to your taste would likely be more available.

Agreed.
YZ250 is an awesome bike, and if I need a fender or whatever, I just steal it from another yamaha (YZ, WR, TTR, etc).
Parts availability is unprecedented, and one of the reasons I love Yamaha's.
And the YZ250 IMO works everywhere as Palmer said. I just abused the shit out of my 06 in the mountains 3 weeks ago, and she still kills it. A very awesome bike for those that can handle it. And IT can handle it. A great all around bike, and lethal at the track, where it is meant to be.

for me the YZ's don't hit hard enough, but they are very capable trail bikes.

You need to seat my YZ325X. Made Pat not want to ride it after riding his KTM300 so much, and made Dave want to race it in the desert.

That bike has a different hit, and it also tractors..
It was sweet, a little gearing change and I would have raced the next day. I like my 300, but that was a sweet bike. I loved my 03 YZ250, it was built nice for the dez that I mostly ride.
