RM125 2004 RM 125 now won't start. Help!!

Good morning everyone,

I recently tore apart my RM 125 and rebuilt it from the ground up, (didn't open the cases). I got everything back on and when I went to start it, it took a few kicks but finally started. When I took it up the road, it just died and wouldn't re-start. I brought it back to the house and kicked it a few times with no avail. Then the carb started pouring gas out of the float overflow until I shut the gas off. I did rebuild the carb with a Moose kit. When I took it apart again after these trial runs everything seemed to be good, no holes in the float, gaskets set, etc. I tried putting new plugs in and that didn't help either, I never got it to fire again after that. Again gas was leaking out of the carb.

The compression is good, and when I checked for spark it seemed to be very week. I noticed that the spark plug was not "clicking" into the coil cable. Another odd thing I noticed is that the receiving end of the cable spins on the cable, it seems like it's not connected but there is a slight spark.

Essentially it seems like there are two problems here, weak spark and carb keeps overflowing! Helllllp, I want to ride before the snow flies. Thanks, Rick

I am guessing you screwed the float up or didnt set it right. Now your engine is probably full of gas. You Should always include a good description of what the spark plug looks like when you are asking running or starting questions. None of us is there to see or hear what you are facing and the plug is the easiest way to start the process so to speak. I couldnt care less how old it is by the way.

You telling me that it is pouring fuel tells me that you need to deal with that first, and probably will need to dry the engine out or kick until about March.

Next would be to cut about a half inch off the end of the spark lead at the cap, and see if it will screw back on snugger. Sooner or later y ou need to get a cheap multi meter so you can test coils and stators.

Welcome to the forum and I am going out on a short limb here and going to say welcome to motorcycle mechanics 101.

We deal with this question about 3 times a week.
1: the float probably needs to be set properly so let's start there. Do you have a manual?
2: post a picture of the plug even if it's new. Fresh out of the cylinder after you tried to start it.

Yes, the overbearing Moderator has 'censored' you all, yet again. What a travesty.
I have taken the liberty of restarting this thread. This may have included the editing of your post. I imagine we can get back on track fairly easily, as just the wrong foot was "applied first."
If anyone has a problem with the method in which I am handling this particular situation, please PM me and we can discuss.

Welcome rhillard! Post up some photos of this rig. Did you take any before and afters of the work you did?
Your problem sounds like a float setting issue. I would reset the float per the service manual.
What was the compression reading in PSI?
If you saw spark, it is probably OK. Nothing easier than replacing a $3 spark plug, though. Some don't 'click' in like a car, and make more of a washboard sound as it clicks over the tiny threads.
Cut the plug wire back a bit, like Andy mentioned, and re-thread the cap onto the plug wire.

Big Dan,
How gracious of you, and very well "replied" to the OP, rhillard.
I hope your point was well taken by him, as well as our "censored" ones.
Let's all start anew shall we?

You're up rhillard...
