Socorro Valley 100 Race Report

I have missed several events on the NMDRC circut due to other commitment's, regardless, prior to this event I was sitting 4th behind so regardless of this event's reputation as the roughest and most unfun event I signed up to race, you never know, you might get lucky!

The start was a 2 man 30 seconds apart, 1st and 3rd championship wise lined up in front of me, and I lined up with 2nd. flag dropped and the fact that my bike is in MX trim really showed, winning the race to the front corner was easy work, up a whooped out hill, into some silt beds, I really struggled in the silt, running novice I started at the back so all the fast guys had already gone through and dug some pockets which were well hidden, I got on the balls of my feet and chose 4th gear and bounced through the sage brush until the silty section of the track was behind me, not my section but no big deal. so we exit the silt beds, and drop down into what was once a river bed that was loose sand with small rock, destroyer of rear tires
this section I did a lot better in, I was doing everything right it seemed like, looking ahead, riding on the balls of my feet yada yada yada, ok, so the next part is this nasty single track rock garden that might have once been a river bed, this is 1st 2nd gear always turning, on the pegs type riding, I managed to work myself within sight of the guys that had taken off 30 seconds ahead of me
and when we climbed out I could see their helmets glinting in the sun, well its down into another shale river bed, and its here that I make a big mistake, I get off the course mistaking a danger x for a wrong way x and well, when I figured out what I'd done a couple minutes later I got a revolting feeling and was pretty bummed. I proceed to ride my own race and we get shot up the side of this hill to some really whooped out ledge riding. well, I can't believe my eyes, 2 of the guys in my class are off the side of this sheer cliff! they've already got help so I proceed with my race, I'm alone for a long while and I come across the last of the 4 of us that were in the top 4 points wise, laying by a tree getting medical attention for a broken leg, at this point, I'm in total disbelief, but at the same time, the whole don't crash thing comes up in the back of my head, well, I managed to keep it relatively clean to the end of hte race, making this my first desert racing win and moving me up into 3rd place points wise! 2nd loop is where I crashed, shortly after being passed by the Pro Class leader, he caught, passed and left me all alone leaving just enough time for me to see the red 1 on his bike

It's been a great year, all 3 of the other guys I raced against today are fantastic people that I'm happy to have met and formed friendships with, as well as have raced against, I think we all pushed each other up into the next level (B Class!) and managed to have a lot of fun doing it!

I'm really thankful to have been given the opportunity to race desert this year along side my school and work, it wouldn't have happened without my Dad, I've been blessed far more than I deserve!

Way to keep pushing after you had a little mishap. The key to starting out in racing desert is to ride your own race until you get comfortable pushing yourself a little. The desert can bite and when it does, it will bite hard, trust me I know. One you get comfortable, you can then start pushing to the next level. It is always great to have a coupe of competitors to race against out in the dez as well, you never realize how fast you are going until you hook up with another racer in your class and you do battle. Desert guys send a lot of time racing the desert alone then racing guys in their class. I use to just focus on the dust ahead of me and push to catch it and pass it, then move on to the next dust cloud.

Great job on moving into 3rd place and hope you get more races under your belt next season. I know I sure miss the competitiveness of racing dez.
