Balancing act. DO NOT USE OVEN CLEANER! or if you do, use it and wash off immediately! Leave in on and it will eat the metal no matter what it's made of.
We use what amounts to oven cleaner for all kinds of cleaning of metal. Just don't submerge and leave it.

For crying out loud. If you left it for a day and you are like me, you won't be able to find any damage. Hell I bet you can't find anyone that can show you a picture of any either . Know anyone that ruined an oven or a grill with some easy off?? Come on, anyone??

Deep Creep by Seafoam works well. It great at breaking down carbon deposits. I'd probably use a small wire brush to follow up.
Must have heard lots if stories about how someone dissolved their whom cast iron engine block and crankshaft in the hot tank.
I'd say, "send it out for cleaning"!
