2002 NEW FOR 2002: All-new case-reed engine features a redesigned air intake tract and an electronically controlled RC-type exhaust valve. All-new third-generation twin-spar aluminum frame, a narrower cross section and a 1.1-pound weight reduction. Redesigned rear brake system reduces weight 11.8 ounces. Aluminum spoke nipples on front and rear wheels and a new rear wheel and hub design contribute to unsprung weight reductions of 3.5 and 15.9 ounces, respectively. Refined rider ergonomics. ENGINE: Liquid-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine with 66.4mm x 72mm bore and stroke and 8.5:1 compression ratio. Air intake boot is reshaped and boot volume is increased 65cc to provide a 7 percent increase in airflow capacity, contributing to improved performance in the mid-and upper-rpm ranges. Crankcase reed induction with two-stage carbon fiber four-petal reed valve. RC-style exhaust valve features an NSR® road racing-inspired rotary flap design with electronic control. The electronic control module uses engine rpm to calculate exhaust valve position and signal a DC servo motor to adjust the RC valve. New Exhaust header and expansion chamber. A 16-bit CPU incorporates both the DC capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) and exhaust valve servo control. Clutch damper design improves rear suspension feel and action while accelerating over bumps. Lightweight magnesium clutch cover reduces weight 7.8 ounces. Five-speed close-ratio transmission features a thicker fourth gear. CHASSIS / SUSPENSION: All-new third-generation twin-spar aluminum frame has taller swingarm pivot plates and thinner frame spars to create a narrower overall frame cross-section. Together with a new, lower subframe assembly, rider comfort and maneuverability are improved and frame weight is reduced 10.6 ounces. Semi-double-cradle design features a single large-diameter, tapered downtube. Two rugged box-section rails attach to the base of the downtube and support the engine. A forged aluminum steering head provides a compact and extremely durable mount for the frame spars and engine downtube. Swingarm features a dual-axis, double-taper design with a large cast aluminum cross-member. Swingarm casting walls are 0.5mm thinner to decrease weight by 7 ounces, yet overall rigidity is increased by 20 percent. Front and rear wheels feature HRC© works-type lightweight aluminum spoke nipples. Front wheel unsprung weight is reduced by 3.5 ounces. Together with a new rear wheel, hub and spoke design, rear wheel unsprung weight is reduced 15.9 ounces. Lightweight, 47mm inverted Showa® twin-chamber cartridge fork with aluminum dampers is 12.3 ounces lighter than the previous design and features 12.4 inches of travel, 16-position rebound damping adjustability and 16-position compression damping adjustability. Inner surfaces of front fork outer tubes and rear damper case are molybdenum-coated for smooth, low-friction operation. Pro-Link® single-shock rear suspension features a fully adjustable Showa rear damper and 12.6 inches of wheel travel, separate low-speed (13 positions) and high-speed (3.5 turns) compression damping adjusters and 17-position rebound damping. New HRC works-type rear brake system now integrates the rear master cylinder and fluid reservoir, eliminating the rear master cylinder reservoir and hose. Together with a smaller caliper and smaller-diameter rear brake piston, overall system weight is reduced by 11.8 ounces and serviceability is improved. Rear disc swept area is increased 14 percent to provide optimum braking control. ADDITIONAL FEATURES: New frame allows sidecovers to have larger air intake ducts, contributing to a significant airflow increase in the mid- and upper-rpm ranges. Rider ergonomics are optimized by raising the handlebar 2.5mm and moving it 3mm closer to the rider, raising the seat 5mm and raising the footpegs 10mm. Seat cushion uses multi-density foam construction. Brake lever and shift pedal are redesigned to fit the improved riding position. Brake pedal features a revised ratio to match new rear brake master cylinder design. New chain guide material offers improved wear resistance and durability is increased 300 percent. Chain roller now features a tough, double-sealed bearing. SPECIFICATIONS: Model: CR250R Engine Type: 249cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke with electronically controlled RC valve Bore and Stroke: 66.4mm x 72mm Compression Ratio: 8.5:1 Induction: Four-petal crankcase reed-valve Carburetion: 38mm Mikuni TMX flat-slide Ignition: Solid-state DC CDI with three-dimensional mapping and electronic advance Transmission: Close-ratio five-speed Final Drive: #520 chain; 13T/48T Suspension Front: 47mm inverted Showa cartridge fork with 16-position rebound and 16-position compression damping adjustability; 12.4 inches travel Suspension Rear: Pro-Link Showa single shock with spring preload, 17-position rebound damping adjustability, and compression damping adjustment separated into low-speed (13 positions) and high-speed (3.5 turns); 12.6 inches wheel travel Brakes Front: Single 240mm disc with twin-piston caliper Brakes Rear: Single 240mm disc Tires Front: 80/100-21 Tires Rear: 110/90-19 Wheelbase: 58.7 inches Rake (Caster Angle): 26.73 degrees Trail: 106.7mm (4.20 inches) Seat Height: 37.08 inches Ground Clearance: 13.6 inches Dry Weight: 213.0 pounds Fuel Capacity: 2.0 gallons
