96 suzuki ds 80 high idle in neutral

HI there firstly i will introduce to you all my name is rikki riding from age 4 passion for anything on two wheels thats fast and has an engine :-P .

i come to yous all for advice on my latest project for my nephew a 1996 suzuki ds 80 m
my problem is when the bike is in neutral it wont idle correctly here a few other things it is doing

when in gear if clutch is let out to pull away if you dont let clutch lever fully out the engine idle settles perfect like it should .but if you move it from that point at all it starts to raise the idle again

i have just got a new engine idle screw and spring as it was missing when i bought the bike it is right out and still idles high unless clutch is pulled in at correct point .

i have had the carb cleaned the slide looks a little rubbed in places but still slides freely .
the needle clip is on the second notch from the bottom

i cant think of anything else to add its a really nice bike just this annoying problem and the sound of the high idle definatly aint doing the top end any good everytime i have been trying to fix it ive been using a rich mix of 2 stroke oil .

i appreciate any ideas or help thanks rikki

Welcome Rikki.....so as for your question, does it act the same way every time you let out the clutch, or is it somewhat random, I'm thinking it may be a coincidence as the clutch and throttle are seperate systems, maybe the throttle cable sticking, or is the cable routed correctly? I havn't heard of a problem as described that way, I'm just thinking when you start letting the clutch out it will load the engine as it starts to move, and keep the engine rpm's low, then as you are starting to get under way there is less load, if you have a sticky throttle, or unstable idle circuit it may show as a high idle then.

hi there steve thanks for reply as you said ...
just thinking when you start letting the clutch out it will load the engine as it starts to move, and keep the engine rpm's low<<<<it definatly does this
as for throttle the throttle the slide moves fully up and down ok when i had the carb off the bike
clutch could be a problem still i have had the clutch apart three times now and all seems to be ok apart from the first time when the clutch outer casing side the part that moves freely until you pull the clutch in was NOT moving freely so i stripped it and got it moving again thou its nothing like the movemnt in my cr 80 clutch.
and as for random it is and isnt ie when your in neutral it goes mad really high engine idle but still revs higer when the throttle is pulled .

then when put in first and as you say just before the load comes on it drops too where it sounds like it should be .and if you hold it there it will stay the same untill let out pulled in or put back in neutral .

my engine idle screw is one turn in from fully out the minimum it can go with a bit of lock tite on it .

thanks for your time hope this helps a bit more trying to say it how its happning thanks again

you have an air leak someplace. pull the flywheel cover off and grab a can of wd-40, carb cleaner or brake cleaner.
Start the bike and spray behind the flywheel and see if the speed or engine noise changes. repeat these steps around the carb, carb boot cylinder base and injector pump area.
Let us know what happens. Good luck :thumb:

hi there
Mihylo and paw paw i will check if this is the case with the flywheel as i have already cheacked the boots for any air leaks and installed new air filters aswell will let you know how i got on with flywheel as i have only had it off to clean magnetto thanks again post back soon

thanks for all your help guys problem solved sprayed some cutting oil since i had no wd40 and it took the revs down straight away the leak was on the air box side or carb and the clamp was busted aswell think i will order a kn are these any good as trying to make a good seal on these bikes is hard and a simple clip on kn air filter could make the diffrence what do yous think thanks rikki

AN air leak on the airbox side won't cause the bike to rev. An airleak in the carb may though. spraying to find a carb leak needs to be done very precisely and in small measures.

The only way I see an air leak in the air box increasing the idle speed is if the air filter was over oiled and not dried when the bike was cranked up. You still may have another air leak.

thanks again after a bit of time and messing about with the cv boot and also taking the rubber boot at the head side i found there was no gasket between the engine and the rubber boot so i put a bit of gasket seal on it now i just need to wait on getting new clips to secure it and i will let yous know thanks again rikki

thanks for that information ive been fiddling with it again today and the wir leak must be tiny because i cant see it but when i spray wd40 on the rubber boot at the engine side it calms right down so im going to order new a new one i will update when i get it on as parts coming from usa so takes about a week thanks again

update on suzuki after thinking about ordering parts i tried something new i plugged the 2 stroke injection back into the carb and it now idles fine .unlike the ts 50 x ive got the ds 80 must draw the air in and oil through the carb instead of the cylinder head like the suzuki ts 50 so i think correct if im wrong altho im not using the 2 stroke injection pump it will still draw air in through the carb and by having that pipe of it was drawing in to much if that makes any sence bike runs mint now perfect idle and fast for an 80 that size nephew loves it had him on it today thanks again
