Anyone know anything about ATK 406's????

Hi everyone. I'm here trying to get info on ATK 406's. I found one for 1400$ obo with a title and could make it street legal which is a plus. Ive been looking into getting a bigger bike and selling my rm 125, just isn't enough not a very good trail bike either. And like I said I found one locally to where I live for that price and is very clean looking and maintained well. I'm just trying to get an idea if it's something I should stay away from and if parts are still readily available and things like that. I was looking at some xr400/650's and drz400's too but I'm trying to steer away more from four-stroke and stick with two-strokes(easier to maintain)
But any knowledge or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The ATK was a very interesting and innovative rig. Downside is parts avalibility and it shakes like a wino. The two that I knew best both broke engine mounts from the vibration and the fact that the frames were C and J race frames, and built to be light. The metal was a better grade than you find from any of the factories, but being a little harder and of thinner gauge more prone to cracking it seemed.

1400 sounds awfully high to me. In the end, I think you would be happier with an old wr or rmx if you are looking for a trail bike. I know I would, and I dearly loved my canam 250's.

Oh ok thanks a lot. Yea it being a big bore two - stroke and being tagable for the streets was a the eye catcher for me especially being from PA and it's hard to make a 2stroke road legal here. But I did find a nice ktm 620 with the lc4 with only 2000 miles on it for 2000 obo down side to that though was no electric start until 1996

ATK 406....I ridden one and had the opportunity to race one in the dez once. Supper light, fast and a trip to ride. The rear disk brake is mounted to the tranny so you would stall the bike often until you figured it out. I am sure finding parts for this bike would be hard now though.

Oh yeah, I remember that bike now.... Lots of power but you couldn't dial it in for racing if your life depended on it.... Also I remember the rear brake being not so good an idea.

Also was looking at a ktm 380 too
that is the best trail bike ever made, as long as it has the inverted forks, i think after 99 they changed to that?I that motor has as much torque as youll ever need, and good enough top end to run mx. i got my 300 because i wanted a new bike, but if i was looking older one and found one of those, id buy it.

Thanks for the article it is a good one and get some good info off of.

And the 380exc I was looking into is a 98 not to sure if it has inverted or not. But my uncle had one and said it was a blast to ride one of the the bikes all around he's ever rode and jeep up with his buddies cr500 sept off of the start.

Here is a good article about the 560 4 stroker and my old race buddy Chris Crandall

You know Chris? The bikes were gorgeous, some changed to a crwheel and brake, but the ones i rode hadnt had that.

Chris was as much at home playing football as on a bike. Only met him one time and never did hear why he drifted out of desert. But he was an impact player while I knew he was there at least.

Yeah I knew Chris. Raced against him. My first dez race was at Whiskey Pete's and when I was finishing my 3rd loop he had just won the race after the fourth loop (45 miles). I still had another loop to go. The helicopter had him clocked at over 110mph coming across a dry lake bed on the ATK. They could not keep up with him. He blew his knee out on a get off in Mexico at one of the baja races which pretty much ended his racing after that.

Just all of a sudden I quit hearing about him. I am sure he is still having fun doing something with a motor. I about half expected to start seeing his name attached to a buggie or pickup.
