New rider - need advice please

Hello! New dirt bike rider here. Now I’ve rode a little pee wee 80 before, but I don’t consider that real riding. I am 20 years old 6 ft tall and 170lbs.

Tomorrow I am buying a used, well taken care of, 2007 KTM exc 300. I’m getting it for an amazing deal, which is why I’m not getting a less powerful bike to begin with. I’ve read some reviews on the bike and they are all great reviews. One common factor of all the reviews is how powerful and fast the bike is. My dad has 1000s of hours of riding and has taught me a little about these big bikes. I’ve practiced putting around our small yard on a YZ 250. So I understand small things like to let out the clutch slowly with a little throttle etc.

Getting to my main question - Even with as safe as I’ll try to be if I make one small mistake I have no experience how to control a big bike very well and I could go down quick and often. Could anyone please tell me if there’s a way to limit the power/speed on the bike for a while until I get the hang of riding it pretty well? If not could anyone offer me some tips, tricks, or advice starting out please?

I’m so excited to pick up this new hobby, but I want to be as careful and safe as possible when doing so! Thanks in advance for your responses.

I agree with Big Dan.
That bike is nearly in the same class as any 2 stroke 250.
It's gonna be fast, or at least it should be.
Just be careful, and start slow, building up to whatever speed you take it to.
Be prepared to crash it, and hope that you dont.
But you're 20, you'll be fine!
Just watch out for the 8 year olds!
And if you can, follow them.

Will start slow indeed! Thanks for the advice.

Welcome..
That is a sweet and clean 300 you have there. I am riding a 300 as well. Great all around bikes. The EXC will have a mellower motor compared to the XC or SX versions. You can put a heavier fly wheel in it to give you more grunt off the bottom which will make it more mellow depending on the flywheel weight you install. This will also help in not stalling at low speeds as well.

Regardless at 6', you can touch the ground good so you have that advantage as well.
