How often do you see this happen with a stolen bike?

 AWESOME!!!!

In April of this year, my buddy's wheeler was stolen from my cabin. It was turkey hunting season, and with everything involving hunting, wheelers just work better than bikes. His buggy broke down because he is a total putz when it comes to maintenance. It was pissing gas out the carb, and I just didn't want to mess with it since I had offered to do under better circumstances many times. It was Sunday evening, and we would be back the coming Friday afternoon, so he just parked it beside my cabin and said he would take care of it then.

My cabin is pretty much off the beaten path. You have to know it's there to know it's there. I've been broken into before, always through the front gate, the ONLY way into the property since the surrounding area is DEEP hollows, mining high walls, and shit so thick, rabbits can't get through. To insure nobody gets in (or out!) I dug a moat at the entrance with my backhoe and piled 6 foot high dirt barriers studded with 16" diameter buried telephone poles strung through with 3/4" cable, covered in chain link fence, and planted with multi-flora rose bushes...natures concertino wire.

There was a local ring of thieves that was casing everyones place out, apparently, and striking when the iron is hot to score your stuff. They did. They dragged his non-running ATV down a steep hollow, through some NASTY green-meanies, and managed to pick it up and OVER my wall of death. THAT HAD TO HAVE TAKEN at least 4 grown men and a mule!

Got a call last week! They caught the :finger: ers and busted the theft ring!! And my buddy gets his buggy back! And I have some peace of mind knowing that someone who was casing my place out every week is gonna get a new daddy in prison!

Here's the story (play the vid too): http://wtrf.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=82281

We are going to keep tabs on the justice process to see how many people they caught and how much time they get!

That's cool as hell and a big relief to me, and certainly my buddy!

Right on BuckRun.:thumb: You got his buggy back:thumb: and some thiefs will be off the streets for a little while.

As Ossi would say," It's better to be perpitrated then penitrated".:thumb:

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I love to hear about thieves going to jail, now they shall get F over.

Jail sucks, I seen this guy come in last week with Tat's on his face acting bad ass,
Last night I noted that he has some awesome raccoon eyes. I asked a CO whom hit him
and he laughed and said his entire pod got in a shot.

These ass hats will get whats coming, everyone hates a theft.:smirk:

I hate thieves...............I always worry about break ins at the REZ, lots of crack heads out there. Use to have an old fell who lived out there that we paid to come and snoop around a couple times a week. He got real sick and now can't get out of the house!

Update:

Went to the see the county Sheriff today to get my friends bike back. We filled out some paperwork and talked to the investigating officer. He said that in his experience, these guys will get off with very little time (MUCH less than a year) if ANY, and will likely only receive probation, a fine, and make restitution. He said this is due to the fact that the county is so poor, they don't want to pay to house them in a jail. The prosecutor will likely bargain the charges down. Not only that, but the defense won't release the bikes and want them saved ( pictures won't do) until an agreement is reached or a trial is over. Until then, they sit outside in an open parking lot.

Out of all nine bikes they stole, my friends is the only one that got stripped down! They took body work, electrical, the winch, racks, etc. When we get the bike back, the judge will order that they pay for making the bike right again, but that can take up to 2 years according to the sheriff.

Overall, it sucks. We would have been happier to get a stripped down bike an have the SOB's in jail for 3 to 5, than to have them walking and paying restitution. What would you rather see if this were you?

If they admit guilt can't you throw a civil lawsuit at them for at least enough to repair the quad? :noidea:

The judge WILL make them pay restitution. The bike WILL get fixed, but that process of getting the money from them can take up to 2 years. My friend would rather pay to fix the bike himself and see these guys do some serious time in a real prison. They didn't do this alone, there were more people involved, they just weren't caught and these two guys just said it was them and only them. The message this sends to the locals is that you can get away with this without going to jail and suffering any real serious consequences. A jail term of a couple or more years would send a message to everyone that they should leave others peoples stuff alone.:naughty: The county where my cabin is at only has one sheriff car on the road for the entire region. The odds of getting caught doing anything are slim to none. Now, with these guys likely to get off with a wrist slap, the punishment doesn't exist if you do get caught. I guess that makes this area like the wild west.

The dirt bag has to have money that you can get at for that to be any good. Might be worth a small claims action. A normal lawsuit would be way too expensive to make it worth while.

What's up with Ohio? Have the liberal criminal coddling types taken over your county or what? The guy who stole my friends bike went down as a three time looser and got a long term. Should be 25 to life, but I never looked after the sentencing. Then again no wonder California is so broke.

Maybe there's hope for California after all...all the lib's are moving to the MidWest :smirk:
