Not sure if there are any (legally) free photo editing programs out there, but if there are I'm sure Trav knows about it.

Yes there are several that you can use. Most will take some bit of learning just to use the program but here ya go....

GIMP is a oldie but goodie and they have a photoshop like clone http://gimpshop.com/

You could also use one of those online sites if you are just messing with photos http://www.picnik.com/

Then of course there is always Adobie Photoshop Express its free.
