Mammoth, Rubicon, Deer Valley, Slick Rock, Pismo Beach

Picture Heavy!

This is mostly truck related, with a few pictures of passing riders.

As soon as summer school cut loose I pulled the doors off the tacoma and packed her up for a much needed trip! First stop was near Mammoth Lakes. Camped out on the top of Lookout Mountain and headed to June lake the following day for some cold beer and inner tubing.

Next stop, Loon Lake (westward entrance to the Rubicon Trail, Lake Tahoe).

The next day after everyone had arrived we lined up and got ready to head into the Rubicon Trail. The mandatory dam shot.

We encountered a couple riders going up cadillac hill. They were pretty beat up from the first 3/4 of the trail. They were intending on doing the entire trail in one day, roughly 50 miles total including the few miles of paved road to town. They were both decent riders, but a little unprepared. One of the guys didn't have bark busters, nor did he bring any spare levers. He ended up busting his lever and having no tools to fix it. Luckily for him I had some hose clamps and duct tape and fixed him up enough to finish the trail and get into town.

After 3 days on the con we camped out at Lake Tahoe. Woke up bright and early to head down to Deer Valley and Slick Rock trails about 50 miles south of Lake Tahoe. 2 of the guys decided to head straight to Pismo Beach and take the scenic route along 101 rather than doing more rock crawling .The three of us Tacomas pushed on!

On our way down the 4 headed to Stockton. The roads were a little slick and someone managed to slide off the road. Gave him a little tug and got him on his way again.

Last stop Pismo Beach!

This Mercedes saw 3 high tides while we were there.....

Now that this trip is over and I have gotten my wheeln oats out for a bit, I am going back to riding! Looking forward to some BRAAAAP time!

Great R&R...as much as I like wheelin I don't think I'd ever be prepared enough for a trip like that...:thumb:
It took me a while to get my truck and my driving ability up to par before taking on the con. About 2 years to get the truck built to what it is today, and about 6 months prior to the trip with maintenance (ie clutch, timing belt, water bump, ball joints, u-joints, etc). But it all paid off...nothing broke, didn't have to get winched/strapped, only body damage I got was from a damn tree trying to get lined up for a big obstacle. Of course it had to be on something stupid. :banghead:
Here's the tree that got me...notice the lack of rocks....but one of them bucked me just enough and slinkied my bed into the tree just enough to push in the sheet metal the size of a baseball.

Words and pictures can't sum up how much fun this trip was. Nothing compares to taking on a trail that takes 3 days to complete with some of the best scenery in California.

That about sums it up :thumb:

... and you know your favorite part was Mammoth.... :thumb:
Close...but no. I'll give you a hint, it wasn't pismo beach either  :smirk:

In fact I didn't particularly care for pismo beach at all. Sand just isn't my thing, two wheels or four.

Very sweet, epic, awesome, juicy, yummy, hell that was stupendous of a RR. :thumb:
Please invite me next time you wheel. I just sent my 96 FZJ80 to Man-A-Fre for a 4 inch lift, Sliders, Bash Plates, Bumpers F/R w/12,500 pound winch and spare tire mount/Jerry Can combo, and ARB air lockers front and rear. (I have the model without stock lockers) I have not wheeled in so long I think I forgot how.
My Cruiser had been sitting there waiting for the kids to grow up and a new look so it was cheeper than buying a RZR900, plus I can drive it any place I like. Kind of like having a DS bike. :smirk:

Rivet- those are awesome pics:thumb::thumb:
Thanks :thumb:

Ill be sure to let you know the next time I head out in the truck. Sounds like you are getting a lot of work done! Didn't I ask you if it was your LC that was about to go under the knife after the LPNF ride?:thinking:

Looks like a fun trip. Heading out tomorrow early for the Rubicon. Be up there for 4 days but we're just dropping in Cadillac and RELAXING at the Springs. I don't feel like sitting in traffic so I'll let the madness come to me.

:wiggle:
Not me getting any bionic work done. I think that was the geek?
Geek for the knee yes? The knife on your LC = skids, lockers, etc

Round Up? Sure glad we missed out on the traffic! We only saw a few other rigs on the trail and had every camp spot to ourselves! We saw a group of built buggies (prepping for stampede) pass us. They managed to make it from loon to the springs and BACK in the time it took us to go one mile . During the week, after a major weekend/event (cantina i believe) worked out perfectly for us IFS guys. Sure could have used a crawlbox to make it even slower though :smirk: I could have spent days at the springs, it so nice down there. The caretakers are some cool peeps too, very informative and friendly. I think next time I will make a 4/5 day trip out of it. Wouldn't mind camping at spider lake, then buck, then the springs for 2 days. Have a good time working .
Grweat pics... looks like blast.. been a few years since ive did trailing in a truck:thumb:
sounds like a long break.

awesome!!! that looked like one hell of a time. :thumb:
It was! Can't wait to do it again. :thumb:

What a vacation! It looks like you did it all. Those are some hardcore trails you went on. How many miles in a day? Or was it even a mile:smirk: Im just teasin ya! It is impressive :hail:and fun to watch people navigate their trucks through stuff like that. I know it takes some skills and nerve.

That scenery is to die for. What fun, Great report!:thumb:
