Caselli Wins National Hare & Hound Opener

Kurt Caselli begins title defense with win.
Last year, Kurt Caselli appeared to have the win in the bag, but a fluke mechanical problem forced him to push his expired bike about a mile up a grade in sandy soil for a well-deserved fifth-place finish at the opening round of the AMA Racing/Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series.

Kurt Caselli won the opening round of the AMA Racing Hare & Hound Championship Series at Lucerne.
This year, the 2011 series champ enjoyed smooth sailing from start to finish at the Desert Motorcycle Club's 45th Winter Classic at the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area east of Lucerne Valley, California, on January 22. In fact, he insists it didn't even enter his mind. "Last year was kind of a fluke thing," he said. "Even after that race we had it all figured out so it wasn't even an issue [anymore]."
He continued, "I got a good jump and was able to get out front and ride my own race."
Monster Energy Kawasaki's Destry Abbott may not be focusing on a single series this year, but he's far from retired, as he proved by running second. But when his rear brake faded, he couldn't hold off last year's Winter Classic winner David Pearson or David Kamo.
THR Motorsports Kawasaki racer Pearson said, "Getting second overall at the first round behind Caselli [means you're] pretty consistent and you've got to be consistent all year to have a chance at winning the championship."
Kamo made his National hare & hound debut for Johnny Campbell Racing Honda a good one in third, his best finish since 2010. Abbott held on for fourth followed by Purvines Racing Kawasaki's Justin Morrow, Gary Sutherlin, Ricky Russell, 250cc winner Skyler Howes, Max Eddy, Jr., and Axel Pearson.
The race was marred by a fatality suffered by So Cal Motorcycle Club's Lance Black who crashed early on the second loop of the two-loop, 80-mile course. He is survived by his wife and two children. In addition, several others were injured including Jacob Argubright (suspected broken collarbone) and women's champion Shayla Fulfer (released from the hospital after checking for internal injuries).

Four straight for Kurt Caselli

Once again, FMF/KTM's Kurt Caselli took top honors in the desert. For the fourth straight time, Caselli breezed to victory in the Kenda AMA National Championship Hare & Hound Series, this time at the 26th running of the Viking MC's Virgin Voyage National in Lucerne Valley, California, April 22. Caselli, the defending champ, has won every round so far this year.
Finishing behind Caselli was pack of Kawasakis led by David Pearson who took runner-up honors. Third went to Jacob Argubright, followed by Justin Morrow and Nick Burson.

Caselli Returns And Wins Nevada Hare & Hound

Race for the title tightens.
The AMA Racing/Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship resumed with the Silver State Trail Blazers M.C./THR Motorsports Muley Run 100 in Panaca, Nevada, Saturday, September 8, where Red Bull Kurt Caselli captured his fifth win of the year. It was his first race back since breaking his shoulder in Utah last May, causing him to DNF that race and miss the following race, as well.

At Panaca, Caselli got off to a fast start, grabbing the early lead and never looking back.

Kawasaki's Jacob Argubright held second for most of the race and held off points leader, Kawasaki rider David Pearson.

Kawasaki-mounted T.J. Hannifin finished third, followed by teammates Justin Morrow and Nick Burson.

Pearson leads Caselli by 13 points with two rounds left on the schedule.

Caselli Closes In With So Cal National H&H Win

2012 title to be deciding in final-round showdown.

Kurt Caselli kept his title hopes alive after winning the penultimate round of the 2012 AMA Hare & Hound National Championship in Lucerne Valley, California, October 14.

After a brief battle with rival, Kawasaki pilot David Pearson early in the race, Caselli went on to claim victory at the So Cal M.C. National, staged at the Johnson Valley OHV Area.
Pearson finished second. Although he saw his points lead over Caselli shrink from 13 points to eight, he can still wrap up the 2012 championship with a second-place finish at the series final, even if Caselli wins. But a third-place finish and a Caselli win would see the defending champ, Caselli, take the title for a second time.
Purvines Racing Kawasaki's Nick Burson edged out teammate Justin Morrow for third, while KTM rider Ivan Ramirez rounded out the top five overall.

Caselli Wins Hare & Hound Final

Kurt Caselli retains number-one plate (maybe)

Going into the final round of the 2012 Kenda AMA Hare & Hound Championship, Kurt Caselli knew what he had to do in order to keep the number-one plate on his FMF/KTM for another year. His plan was to win and simply hope for the best. As it turned out, his win-and-hope plan came together but not without some anxious moments.

Kurt Caselli topped the final National of the year at the 100's M.C. Hare & Hound in Lucerne Valley.
The title chase came down to a final-race showdown between Caselli and Kawasaki rider David Pearson at the 100's M.C. National Hare & Hound at the Johnson Valley OHV Area in Lucerne Valley, California, October 28. The scenario was simple, Pearson, who had an eight-point lead over Caselli going into the final, need to finish right behind Caselli to wrap up the '12 title. At first, it appeared that Pearson had done exactly that, taking the checkered flag in second place while chasing the winner, Caselli. But a pit-stop infraction earlier in the race cost him five positions, for which he was docked, and the championship, though the race is under appeal and still unofficial. But, as of now, it appears that Caselli has successfully defended his hare and hound title.
Finishing third in the race was Kawasaki rider Jacob Argubright, followed by Honda-mounted David Kamo, Kawasaki pilot Nick Burson, Yamaha rider Skyler Howes and Pearson.

It's Official: Kurt Caselli Is Champion

AMA denies appeal by David Pearson

It's confirmed: Kurt Caselli is indeed the 2012 AMA Hare & Hound National Champion. The title was in question for a few days when, after the final race of the 2012 Kenda AMA National Hare & Hound Series in Lucerne Valley, California, October 28, David Pearson made a request to appeal the results, but that request was today officially denied by the AMA
A release from the AMA stated: The AMA has certified the provisional results of round 10 of the AMA Hare & Hound National Championship Series held Oct. 28, 2012, in Lucerne Valley, California. The results were pending an appeal by David Pearson of Panaca, Nevada. Pearson was assessed a five-minute penalty for failure to adhere to rider fueling guidelines. Pearson's appeal has been denied. With the certification of the results, Kurt Caselli of Palmdale, California, is the 2012 AMA Hare & Hound National Champion.
While running second to Caselli in the race, Pearson entered the designated pit area to refuel, and did so on the fly, without stopping, discarding the fuel container on the ground before heading back out on the course. One of the fueling guidelines is that a rider must refuel over a BLM-mandated mat.
"I want to apologize to all my sponsors, fans and organizers for this," said Pearson in response. "They (THR Motorsports, Bob Bell and my team) put a lot of time and money into me winning the AMA Championship. I think this experience was costly, but I can learn a lot from it as a rider and a person. I saved a couple of seconds, but it cost me an entire championship."
Pearson needed to finish second to Caselli to wrap up the 2012 title and actually crossed the finish in second place, seemingly winning the championship, but the five-minute penalty knocked him pack to sixth in the race standings and ultimately second in the championship.
