2 Stroke 250 vs 300/xc vs xcw

So I'm looking to buy a new dirt bike and I'm having trouble choosing which is right for me. I'm looking at the Ktm 250xc, the 250xcw, the 300xc, or the 300xcw. I ride single tracks in the northeast and Im not a very big guy. I weight 145 lb. I have rode my brothers 250xc and I really like it. I do feel like first gear is a little to high for me at times, but that could be because Im not use to the bike. Im having trouble deciding because I'm worried the xcw will be geared to low and if I get the xc I will wish it was geared lower. With the 250 vs 300, I know the 300 is a great woods bike because it has more rotating mass, but im worried it will have to much power that I don't need since I don't weigh that much. Also im coming off a Kawasaki kx250
Is there anyone who has experience with any these bikes and could point me in the right direction?

I own the 300xc, I can ride single track all day, awesome clutch, I can ride tight woods in 2nd and 3rd gear. It really is a cheater bike. Also I run 13/52 gearing.

250XC is going to be like your KX250, more motocross type power band. The XCW is a wider ratio trans and has a little mellower hit on the throttle. Would be a better bike for trees. With your weight, I would go with the 250xcw. You can always change the gearing and/or swap power springs. I have a 300XCW with the red spring installed and race it in the dez and it rips.

I notice , most all threads concerning ktm suggest , Changing this , or that , trans gears , suspension , always something . Don't they make a bike that can be ridden , As delivered ?

All bikes can be ridden right out of the Crate. Some people have preferences like suspension setup, after market parts they like to run, gearing changes to whatever condition they are running in... My 300 is stock. The only mods I have done to it, is steering Damper, rear disk guard, swing arm sliders and a Rekluse clutch for better riding in the tight rocky or tree sections....Motor is stock, pipe is stock (well I have an FMF silencer for a spark arrester (needed for comp in Ca dez), everything is stock. I just changed the valve spring to Red for more snap (3 springs come with bike, part of normal tuning)

Not sure where you are seeing all KTM threads say to change stuff...KTM makes different model bikes for a verity of riding. You just need to pick whats best for you.

I guess it's rider preference . Just seems that a 10k bike should be pretty much ready to go . I could never spend that much money on a bike . Been spoiled by great used bikes all my life .. .. only upgrades on my bike are thoses done by previous owner .. I ride them , as is , maybe changing compression or rebound settings .. I'm only 5'5" 160 # so no need to change springs , shocks ....

Always rider preference. KTM advertises "Ready To Race" meaning right out of the crate.... That is true, but with any bike, you would need to setup suspension to your liking. Don't need fiddle with jetting anymore as they are FI or TPI.

I have a right , 1 st. Being a U.S. citizen. 1 st. Amendment . 2 nd. Having owned a couple ... nice looking , nice riding , just not reliable as the others I have owned .. Japanese .. I have ridden all bikes the same , not really beating on them , but good hard riding ... trails and harescramble , some mx . Just not the same quality , fit , finish, broken kickstart gears , clutch problems , broken internals , plastic parts instead of metal . Electronics . Ect. By the way , also feel the same about Harley's ....

 :thumb: I liked my YZ250 I had,it was built sweet.
:noidea: Some people have their opinions. It's crazy how people bash on KTM's though.
I know you and Pat are not as bad, but KTM owners are like a cult. More religious than I am Christian about their beliefs. Any time I can dig a Yamaha remark in, it’s all tongue and cheek fun. Like you, giving me a leg up on Pats KTM, Pat not being able to start my YZ325X, and then handing it off to you within seconds of riding it because it scared the the poor guy.

I'm not a Harley fan either. I have a harley dealer next door to my office and I go in there to look at the scooters and not impressed. I like my superbike style bikes.

 Dez Star.....He was not liking that 325 of yours. Probably why he is looking to drop back to a 250. I liked it, jut needed some setup and gearing adjustments for my liking, but as I told you that day, I would have rolled up to the line and raced it and would have had a great time.
