I currently have my bike tore down to almost nothing. When I took the air box out there was a bunch of dirt built up in the tube that connects to the carb. Looks like it's time to replace the air filterView attachment 28508

That's a sign it's running too hot. What's the top of the piston look like?

You'll just have to fiddle with the carb to make it fit in the it's properly.

The top of the piston had a thin layer of carbon built up on it

The carbs cleaned up. I'm still waiting for the top end to show up. And the cylinder head looks good. It'll be awhile before I get the bike put back together, mainly because I'm currently rebuilding a 1985 yz250.
