My first time on a track

Also, I took a lap around the newly configured "National" track at the end of the day.
I tried it first thing in the morning but hit a jump that I wasn't expecting to pop me up as high as it did and it scared the shit outta me.
Then my tires filled with mud and my XR200 didn't have the power to get through it so early, so I got off.
But there were some dudes killing it on that track.
Maybe I should post the vid to my youtube channel so you guys can check it out?
M33 has already asked about it and Gary isn't too terribly far...
Let me know.

I'm down yo!:rocker:

I took another lap around that track last weekend, let me me find the video, and I'll post it and send a link.

Right now however, I am licking my wounds, literally.
I got the KLX650 running this afternoon and took it for a ride in my neighborhood after re-setting the float level and needle position, and airing up the rear tire.
Apparently I made it too fast, and I layed it over on the pavement about a block from my house. Goosed it a bit too much I guess.
It was a test drive and of course I was in my shorts and t-shirt. Got a decent road rash on my left leg, and that arm hurts too. Broke the clutch handle.
Time for a beer and relaxing from a long week, and pull some asphalt out of my left leg.
I guess that old saying is true, if you're gonna be stupid, you had better be tough.
I have shown myself that I certainly am that...

But on the bright side the KLX is starting to come along quite nicely

Hell, I hope I can make it to your age!
As it stands now, if I make it to 63 there is a good chance I will be decrepit as hell. I am broken up pretty good.
If I would have known I was going to make it to 30 I would have done a lot of things differently.
Glad you like the posts. And be careful out there :ride:

Sweet vids! :thumb: Keep hammering the tracks and you will see a big improvement on your riding. Yes a YZ250 would be a great bike for that. Also the YZ250 is a great trial bike as well, so you would have an all around bike in one.

I'm not a big track guy, but have put in many laps on the track as well as racing GPs. People laugh at me because I show up in the desert on a Dungey 450SXFE and trial ride it. I like the power this motor puts out and that's why I have it. Works awesome out in the dez.

I will be twisting throttle for many years, though I am slowly slowing down...:smirk:

I too have many many broken bones , all toes , some more than once , ankles , both , lower leg and kneecap , wrist and upper arm , collar bone ,kneck , back , and some forgotten . That was before good saftey equipment was easy and less expensive to own .thank god for craigslist and e bay . To the newer riders , sure it hurts for a little while , but when you can ride with your daughter and grandsons it is well worth it . Please be safe out there

Agreed 100%. Same here on the broken bones(though not as many as you). I am riding with my 4 yr old grandson now and it is awesome.

I wish I would have gotten a bike for my boy sooner, but money was always an issue, and still is.
But it was pretty sad that day on the track a few weeks back when we both got smoked by an 8 year old girl on a 2-stroke 65cc...
Oh well, better late than never.

Maybe you should get those young ones together , could be best thing that ever happened . Match made in motocross heaven !
Thats kinda funny you say that. While I was driving my son to his mothers house this morning before work we got to talking about that day and I said "remember when you got passed by that 8 year old girl?"
He said "uh-huh".
I said "Thats almost as bad as...getting passed by an 8 year old girl!"
Then he said, "Dad, I dont think she was 8...I think she was more like 6."

Okay so I have a little more track experience now since the OP, and have some questions.

Sitting on the seat vs standing up?
I'm always on the seat when coming into tight fast corners, but I see dudes ripping through standing up and wonder if that is something I should be working toward?
Also, this past weekend I found myself wanting to stay on the seat longer than I have in the past after the exit of some corners that lead right into a jump, until right before I hit the jump. I felt like I was getting more traction out of the turn and had more control.
Should I be standing up and getting settled in my approach prior to the ramp? Is it better to stay on the seat as long as possible?
Or is it just personal preference?

Also, on exiting some of these turns I see the deep ruts and the 'mushy' space between them and thought "man I better get in that rut cuz if I dont I'm gonna crash", and then some dude comes by me on a 450 and goes over the top of all the ruts like he didn't give didn't give a shit, and he don't crash, and he knocks down the tops of the ruts.
How can I navigate the ruts better?

And rail the ruts if they are for you. Inside or outside rut, whatever feels good. But hey, you're talking to a guy that hasn't been on a track since mike was born.
