dual sport fever

Hey everyone I'm hoping to get some advice. I'm looking at getting a dual sport bike. I want to get a 250 as I have little experience riding on roads. I have ridden a Honda crf250 quite a few times so I'm comfortable on them I also really liked the way the Honda in general, so I was thinking of getting the crf250L however the nearest Orv trails by me are about an hour and 20 minutes and back roads in west Michigan are all 55 mph roads. How well do you think it would do for a long ride at that speed? Are there any bikes that may handle it better?

Look at a good condition used wr250r. They are built for reliability and do well on the highways. Also do great off road compared to heavier bikes like the drz400 or crf250l. The engines are known to be tanks and even the manual doesn't call for a valve check till 26,000 miles! With a new header pipe, exhaust and power tuner the bike will be great.

Jackson409, my Budget is 6,000. The specs on the WR look great, the adjustable suspension would be really awesome as well. The only used listing I have around me is a 2012 with 9,200 miles on it for 3,700 does that sound like a fair deal?

I don't understand. Doesn't the drz lack EFI?
Having ridden both bikes, the drz feels
Like a pig off road (300Lb+ bike). A crf150f felt better on the trail regardless of horsepower. OP, if you want more of a 50/50 bike that is better on road, go drz. If you want better off road, go WRR.

I would look in the 450cc range if you are going to be on the road a lot. 250cc will be enough hp but long periods on the road with a 250 will just exhaust the motor unless you re-gear to have long legs. If you are just hoping from trail head to trail head then it will be fine.

Well the reality is I would ride 45 miles of road for 30 miles of trail. I suppose the weight of the Suzuki would help at those high speeds. Jackson409 are there even any 450 dual sports on the market?

Oh yeah. Wr450 can be plated. Ktm has some 500's that are plated. Husky's, berg's all have the 450-500's that are plated.

A husaberg would be nice... that KTM looks great but I'm really looking to buy brand new.
Oh, well if you only have 6k to spend and want brand new. I am out of answers. No way you're gonna get a new 450-500 for that. Just to let you know if you are traveling those distances with a 250 you're gonna wear that little engine out. Of course you could regear it but you will lose all bottom end grunt.
