RM250 does not Idle

so I pick up a 2000 rm250 and its seem to run good but it will not idle. I can start the bike with out the choke but unless I give it a small amount of throttle it dies. I have notice that if I start the bike with out the choke and then choke it once it is started that it will have an easier time idleing. being that I am new to dirt bikes and never really played around with carbs before I am not sure what this is telling me. I have not pulled off the carb and cleaned it yet and I am think that would be a good place to start. any tips where to start looking if cleaning the carb does not help.

I would start with a good carburetor cleaning.
Typically when a bike will not idle, unless the choke is on, it points to a dirty idle jet.

if it starts without the choke but wont idle and then does idle with choke on I would say just turn the idle screw in to make it idle. If it would not start without choke then it would be a dirty pilot.

Got the carb cleaned up and it runs and idles. Now I just need to do an oil change put a new chain and sprocket on it. The sprocket thats on it now is looking a little round. I also order a used service manual for my bike that i found on ebay for a cheap price. Being that I am new to dirt bikes it could come in handy.

:thumb: I'm glad you got it sorted. Always start with the easy stuff.
The manual will show you everything you need to know. They are an invaluable tool. -BIG DAN:thumb:

looks like I will be adjusting the clutch as well the bike tries to pull forward a bit when I put it in first gear with clutch level pulled all the way in

The guy I got it from said that he had just put a clucth lever on it and it may need some more adjustment. I plan on changing the oil anyways so if the oil change and adjustment dors not fix it I will look intothe plates ans basket

Yea I had read that the clutch on rms where not the best
Yup......but I've been thru a lot with that bike, it's battle scarred, and nasty now, I guess the clutch matches it's personality now. It's a 2005, But the bike still performs like a dream. I've acquired other bikes since, but will never get rid of this one.

so after adjusting the clutch cable and doing an oil change the bike now shifts into 1st much more smoothly. I am glad I did that oil change never seen such dirty oil. I also came home with a bag of goodies for my bike. New chain, front sprocket, rear sprocket, spark plug, and air filter. While I was at it I pick up my self a nice par of riding boots. I should have the rest of my riding gear by next week and then I can head out for my first trail ride.
