Other The 1993 KLX650R Basket-Case Part 2

Okay,
Many of you have participated in the on-going mystery regarding my KLX650 (thank you all) in the thread titled 'KLX650R No-Start', for those that are new, please see this link for what is essentially Part 1 of this saga;
https://www.dirtbikeaddicts.com/content/threads/klx-650r-no-start.9298/
Since I have witnessed this bike run multiple times and I believe I have found new info, this is the new thread which should probably be titled, 'KLX650R Wont Stay Running'.

So here is what is new;
Since I wasn't able to kick it over (I could literally stand on the kickstarter without turning the engine) I re-checked the cam gears and they have skipped teeth, and are off.

Tonight I decided to measure the upper timing chain that I got used off eBay (mentioned in part 1), below is a photo;100_2630.JPG

Below is a photo of what I presume to be the old cam chain (bottom) off this bike since it was in the box of spare parts that the bike came with, next to the eBay chain (top). They are both 47 links long;

Below is a poor photo of the intermediate gear between the upper and lower chain that was also in the box of extra parts, and the above chain wrapped around it. I also presume that this gear is the old original one off the bike, but who knows...;

Does anyone see anything unusual?

well the first thing I thought looking at number 1 was that I would measure a different way than you are. (There is no load on your chain.) I certainly notice that your caliper says it is within spec, but look at your link position and the "dog leg". Hell it could still be in spec on that section even if it was on lapping table or drill press table. Not so much a fan of riddles though. In the one showing the gear I see more excessive wear or uneven "stretch". You saw how the chain loads and unloads at a specific point. I don't have any problem running a used chain, but section by section I measure it ALL before I do so.

I am seeing things I guess, or just being a moron again. Probably both.
It was 4:30am when I posted that. I've been trying to rush things, trying to get it ready for when it cools off here (which is now) so me and my kid can go riding. I've been working lots of OT and burning the candle at both ends on this and multiple other things in my life and at this point I think maybe I should just back-burner this thing and buy another bike to ride in the interim. Parts are not available and expensive. It's a restoration project.

I'll keep working on it and trying to figure out why it's skipping cam chain teeth and wont give up on it, but I have been thinking a smaller bike possibly a 2-stroke would be a quicker path to riding with my kid.
Was thinking a YZ250 would be good. I hear parts are cheap and plentiful. But since I am far from wealthy a used one will still be necessary.
Or maybe even something like this?

Right now I have a KLX650 that keeps jumping timing, and I think that is the main issue, but I am also looking for another bike to ride in between.

i have the same cr. i can more readily get parts for it's 87 cr500 big brother. the yz, from 94 and newer would be good, but if he is on a little trail bike, getting an actual trail bike may be wiser. they are just easier to go his pace on, but i have a few yz's one is a 250 and i like it a lot.

I am going to keep my eyes open for something, but until I find something, what do y'all think I should do with the KLX?
Take the engine out, remove the timing chains and measure them?
I cant think of anything else that would cause it to skip timing. Automatic tensioner appears to be new and functioning properly.
I suppose at this point I should remove the head and inspect.
What else is there?

I'm still into this thing for minimal cash and it's a cool bike.

If it were me I would break it all down and start from scratch. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders so you should be able to mic everything and tell good from bad. Take your time and just go through it and do it right.

since I love my KLR so much I had thought of getting one like yours that might change form and end up being a cafe racer. its easy to make bigger. the frame is lots stiffer than mine is. and it comes with an 18 inch rear rim.

Yeah it's a cool bike. I look forward to the day I get it running. Right now I'm just tired of tearing into it and need a break.
Right now I am pondering a running 1995 XR200. What do y'all think of this;
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/mcy/5782055878.html
I have an xr200. it sure has it's place and it is a good one to ride at the speeds your son is going to be going. they resell good, and i think i would consider keeping it and letting him cut us teeth on a fullsize with that one. my son took a stint on an xt200 i had for riding with him when he started to get used to full size and full weight without full power.

Thanks Big Dan! I was thinking along those lines as well.
I brought the XR home. It's got 2 brand new tires, doesn't leak, fired right up, and was well taken care of. I even have all of it's service receipts. Got the title transferred and the OHV sticker and we are going riding tomorrow.
I wont be winning any races with it, but I'm 45 and although I am athletic and have good ability, I have sustained some major injuries in the last 10 years and I dont heal as quick as I used to. It makes the appropriate amount of ponies, and will be enough to cart my 180lbs around I think, and even though it's a bit too small for me, I'm over looking cool.
This will also give me a chance to remove the KLX engine and go through it proper, and as you suggested ossagp, this will be my son's next bike. He already loves it and cant wait to get on it.
So, all happy now in AZ :-)
