Gallup GP Webe Race Report

August 16, 2015 I had the chance to race a Webe Hare Scramble in my hometown, it was a first, we've had races here before, but Webe is a bit of a big deal here, its a regional series, attracting competition from several states in the neighborhood, colorado, arizona, utah, new mexico, and is a stepping stone to the worcs series for a lot of racers. It is also quite a bit more technical in nature than the average desert race.

Also, unique, is the fact that I had a fairly big hand in terms of course lay out, track prep, and promotion, although the course lay out turned out substantially different than my idea, it was still good and challenging. At only 10 miles, a lot was packed in to make the 2 hours +1 event on sunday a good physical workout.

Sunday, 10:45 race start, starting on the motocross track using a traditional moto start, I was 2nd into the first corner, and was keeping pace with the KTM in front of me until we got off the track and entered the larger of 2 sandwashes, entering I stumbled a bit, didn't go down but enough of a mistake that he pulled away and I never saw him again. I managed to hold on to 2nd through the steep hills and single track up until the start of lap 2, when a yamaha passed, although not for long, as in a silty corner he laid it down, with nowhere to go, I opted to use the good ol up and over, yamaha swing arms aren't that hard for kx450's to get over :smirk:
I would continue to ride in 2nd until in the hills, a husqarvana managed to get by me, although he too quickly fell, but he remounted and reeled me in again by the end of the 2nd lap, not much happened for the 3rd and 4th lap, although I was expecting my 4th to be my last so I put all my remaining energy into that lap, but when I came around, I got the white flag, totally spent, I put it on cruise control, a track that I know pretty well and can usually jump everything on, I rolled most of. Although it was still enough, as only myself and the top 2 managed to complete 5 laps in the allowed time.

3rd is the best I have ever finished in a webe event, and its probably the last one of their races I'll get to do this year.

In a series like that being able to stay on the lead lap is doing very well I think. It can be kind of conflicting when you think about the reward and the punishment for a second, but at the finish I am sure the "glow" set in.

Good job!
