250 1988 yz250 build

image.jpg As posted in another thread I just got this 1988 Yamaha yz250. It does not run, but the top end was just rebuilt. It's missing some bolts in some places, two of the plastics are missing, and it has a real bad spray paint job all over. I've already done some work to it but here are the photos of it before I did anything to it at all! I'll post more info on what's wrong later on but here it is for now!

Alright I've spent the past few days working hard on getting the paint off the plastics. I took all of them off and used paint remover on it then hosed it off. It took most of the paint off but there was still lots of spots left on each of them so now I've been putting paint remover and scrubbing each piece individually. I'm done with the front fender completely and a bunch are almost done. Also I bought a new master link for the chain since it didn't have one, new spark plug, new clutch lever (the old one is snapped), and finally a new OEM fuel screw set because the carburetor didn't have one! I also soaked the carburetor in carb cleaner for 24 hours too clean everything real good so there will be no issues with that. I also just ordered new UFO radiator shroud plastics since the bike didn't have any. I'll keep you updated with progress. Also quick question, is the Mikuni carburetor the one that the bike came with stock? I want to be sure I bought the right fuel screw. Also what affect does not having a fuel screw do? Will it not crank without it?

Yeah when I first tried to crank it, all I did was put the new spark plug in and tried to crank it several times but it wouldn't crank so hopefully that's it. Top end was just rebuilt and it has spark and a new air filter. It should crank with the new fuel screw and carb cleaned and jetted.

What we need to do is to increase the bag limit on people who think "it looks better in black". then we could save a lot of classic bikes and sheet metal from those lacking any form or respect or taste. Seems to be no shortage so i say "OPEN SEASON" and screw the limit.

Yeah I think it looks bad enough to spray paint a dirt bike and even worse in black. The white already looks great.

They still are the best looking bike anyone built I think. Airscrew in and choke on should get it started prime it if it doesn't go in a few kicks. Providing you are sure its getting spark.
