Other 1982 Honda XR200R Sputtering Issue

Hello, I bought a 1982 Honda XR200R quite cheap and I'm having an issue that I hope someone can help me with. The bike will start up and idle just fine, but while riding, if I give it just a little gas, it starts sputtering. If I get on the throttle, it takes off like a rocket without the slightest miss.

Anyone know what I should look at first?

Thanks!

Welcome!!!!
Sounds like a dirty carb to me. I would pull the carb and clean it twice then once more for good luck. While doing that I would set the float hieght.
Dirty carbs and floats out of spec are really the only things I've ever seen go wrong with these old school XR's. They are bullet proof.

This carburetor is unlike any I've seen. The floats are independent of each other and slide onto pins in the bowl. Is it possible that this isn't the correct carb?

Yep. Mikuni. Set that arm to where both sides are in alignment with eachother. Set the carb upside down. Set the tab to where those arms are parallel with the carb body's gasket surface. Its not stock as you figured.

Drive the needle jet holder out of the carb body and clean it really well. Take the mainjet and washer out and drive the brass out.
